Fans run the ship for a week: Clausen

If the fans ran the franchise, they would make Matt Millen look like a genius. Guys like CRA and TRD are so anti-Clausen that they're willing to write virtual novels about how bad he is, and will present the same old tired crap about him over and over and over and over and over as if it's fact. And it isn't.

Here's some fact. He's still on the team. If he was half as bad as you make him out to be, then he would have been cut when we signed Null and we would have started Pike instead. We didn't, and it's not because of some imagined plot by Hurney/Richardson/Tooth Fairy that you think exists. It's because there's a real possibility that actual experts using actual film determined that there's actual potential there. And they're smarter than you, so get over it already.

If you want to do the absolute best thing you can for the franchise, then draft Newton and let him sit while you find out whether he can do the same thing in the pro game that he did in college. In the meantime, start Clausen. Tailor the game plan to highlight his strengths, and hide his weaknesses. Work hard at making him look capable, and enjoy it if he surprises you. If he doesn't, bring in Cam as soon as you're able to and cut him.

The point here is, if you can make Clausen look capable (and they did it with Kyle Orton in Denver, remember?), then you've got trade bait if Newton pans out. If you can't, then you're where we already are, but with a potential franchise QB on the bench. And if both Clausen and Newton flame out, there's always Pike (who half of the Huddle was gushing over a year ago at this time). If all three fail, then we'll probably be in position to get a good one next year.

Moore will not be a Q3 anywhere.

He will be looking at places where he has a chance to start, if nothing comes up he'll look for backup jobs with Carolina as his first choice but he won't be a #3 anywhere

I agree with this. Q3 roles are reserved for rookies with potential, not JAGs that flamed out hard in their fourth year.

WTF are Clausen's strengths?

Relationship Creativity?

Yeah, we get it. You're an expert in your own mind, and you don't see any.

Those who are good enough to actually get paid to evaluate players may disagree with your assessment. We'll find out soon enough. :)

Every single person except for Marty Hurney agreed, every single one. The only reason Marty didn't agree is he didn't do his homework because he thought we didn't have a shot.

We'll see soon enough. I've heard "This GM said..." on both sides of the argument. Frankly, I've read more reports of people thinking that he will get better than I have about Moore. And I don't think Moore is nearly as bad as he showed last year, for what it's worth.

I really doubt Clausen goes anywhere. He is on his rookie contract, is cheap and has only been here for 1 year. If we kept Jarrett for 3 years we won't be cutting clausen so soon.

Both Clausen and Moore are coming off injuries and neither is a lock to be healthy or fully recovered. We saw what happened with minor surgery to Otah. Somehow I figure one of them could end up on IR.

I think we will bring in a vet and take 4 or 5 QBs to camp. Obviously one or two will be cut. At this point it would make no sense to cut anyone. Lets see who picks up the system if and when we actual play football. At that point we can decide who will be cut, traded, or retained. Seems to me that every Qb will be in a new system unless we get a Volek who played in San Diego's system.

Competition will bring out the best in all of them.

Jag, why on earth would you find it acceptable for the Panthers to start either of those guys next year? Maybe we can pick up a FA or draft a rookie, but enough of that.

Because I honestly believe that neither is as bad as he showed on the field. You need to look at rookie receivers, a makeshift offensive line, and one of the worst OCs in the league on a staff that knew it wasn't coming back and consider those factors when you judge the offense. QB is just the most visible position.

Moore has shown an ability to be an effective game manager, but not in 2010. Clausen was a rookie, and rookies tend to get better. I'm pretty sure that at least one of those guys will improve to a level of at least decent. And if we get our line back, and our running game takes off, and the defense plays well, then decent is going to look pretty good in Panther-land.
