PSN is down?

Yes, it's down everywhere. It's been hit or miss since the last hack job, so who knows?

Also, reading the comments on the ps blog make me sad for humanity. I mean seriously, murderous rage over not being able to access a free service? I dread the day that the internet dies, these people will have to come outside and endure real life. I mean, it's a minor annoyance, not the end of the damn world.

Yeah, how about me? I just got my PS3 back after having it out being serviced for a month, and get it back only to find that friggin Anonymous, which I previously held much respect for, crashed it because they are sticking up for some chode who was being sued for jailbreaking the PS3! Now It's going on 2 months since I could play BFBC2!

Anonymous should stick to crashing hate speech Web sites. Because at this moment, they're arse-fugging the people they claim to be sticking up for. Oh, you want us to have the rught to run any operating system on our PS3? Swell, I'm probably never going to do that. What I would like to do is use the PSN, but you jackwagons shut it down!

Updated: PlayStation Network offline from outside attack?

Thursday, April 21 2011, 12:06pm EDT

By Matthew Reynolds, Gaming Editor

© Sony PlayStation Network remains unavailable across Europe and North America, it has been announced.

This morning Sony confirmed that the service was going through a period of unscheduled maintenance and would be live as soon as possible.

However, the firm has confirmed that the outage remains and said that an "outside party" may be responsible.

"As you are no doubt aware, the current emergency outage is continuing this afternoon and all Sony Online Network services remain unavailable," said PlayStation Blog manager James Gallagher.

"Our support teams are investigating the cause of the problem, including the possibility of targeted behavior by an outside party.

"If the reported Network problems are indeed caused by such acts, we would like to once again thank our customers who have borne the brunt of the attack through interrupted service."

He added: "Our engineers are continuing to work to restore and maintain the services, and we appreciate our customers' continued support."

While PlayStation Network has undergone several periods of downtime in the past few months, Sony has previously alerted its users several hours in advance.

Earlier this month several Sony websites went offline due to a suspected DDoS (direct denial of service) attack.

Last week, it was revealed that more than 50 million PlayStation 3 consoles had been sold worldwide.

http://arstechnica.com/gaming/news/2011/02/report-psn-hacked-showing-stunning-lack-of-credit-card-security.ars?utm_source=rss&utm_medium=rss&utm_campaign=rss

"Sony is the biggest spy ever... they collect so much data. All connected devices return values sent to Sony's servers," the hacker said. He claims that Sony knows what controllers you're using, what USB devices are plugged in, what sort of television you're using—everything. Here's another section of the chat log:

•user2: another funny function i found is regarding psn downloads

• user2: its when a pkg game is requested from the store

• user2: in the url itself you can define if you get the game free or not. requires some modification in hashes and so on tho

• user3: ..

• user2: is like

• user8: :D

• user3: my god

• user2: drm:off

That's not all: your credit card information is apparently being sent as an unencrypted text file. This is how the code is being sent to Sony:

creditCard.paymentMethodId=VISA&creditCard.holderName=Max&creditCard.cardNumber=45581234567812345678&creditCard.expireYear=2012&creditCard.expireMonth=2&creditCard.securityCode=214&creditCard.address.address1=example street%2024%20&creditCard.address.city=city1%20&creditCard.address.province=abc%20&creditCard.address.postalCode=12345%20

This information is allegedly being stored online and is updated every time you turn on your system. We've been receiving reports from various sources that e-mails are being sent to those with hacked firmware even before they log back into the PlayStation Network, which is even more evidence that Sony is grabbing information from your system just from being connected to your wireless network

That sucks, I'm going to have to start storing up on PSN cards... But, I don't think users are in danger because of this hack, according to this article, the hackers are after PS' executives in retaliation for suing hackers for the jailbreak hacks... Still, kind of scary:

That third party activity, speculated to be the work of Anonymous is becoming quite terrifying if the reports are true. According to ARS Technica, the group is gathering information on human targets rather than websites, including the Sony executives, their wives, schools their children attend and even flower shops they buy from.

ARS Technica notes this is the work of some of the Anonymous members banding together in a "Sony Recon" mission they formed. The website states that they are able to obtain this info on Sony execs by visiting public information websites to get more data.

While usually this public info is merely posted to make fun of the execs, it appears some of the Sony Recon members are taking things further. One chat from a member known as "sonyrecon335" indicates they had a bunch of pizzas delivered to J. Tretton, and another chat has "sonyrecon335" actually saying he called up the Sony exec to ask about the charges Sony pressed against one of the PS3 jailbreak hackers. The Sony Recon member says the exec hung up on him without answering his questions, using some strong language to refer to the exec.

This is clearly a scary way of how the internet can be abused to harass others in a new form of cyber bullying. It's particularly scary that this is happening over video games and not only disrupting a few lives but many. It can only be hoped that these individuals are brought to justice for bringing the Sony Playstation network down, and that they do not bring harm to the executives or family members.

I saw earlier that anonymous said they didn't know what was going on, but it appears they do... This is crazy. I'm all for fighting for the cause, but I wish they hadn't taken away my ability to play video games on a holiday from school, lol.

Just went on super mutant killing spree through the capitol bldg in fallout 3. I wonder if i'll get my trophy for killing all of the behemoths once the network comes back online. Oh well, if not i still have my prior save and can so it again. It was fun enough.

If it's still down tomorrow, i'll have to make myself finish Oblivion. I pay for too many games and never finish them. At least this isnt like the date glitch the older ps3s had last year where nothing at all would work.

    • Perfect example why Zod said they are getting rid of the Tinderbox. 😉 Segmenting which swallow has the best airspeed velocity is what divides us! Bravo Zod.
    • I've been reading around on different websites about our team and OTAs and minicamps.  There are several members of this team that need to step up.  These are a few of mine.  Please feel free to add to the iist. 1. Bryce Young, Obviously the No. 1 person who needs to step up.  Bryce has been given everything a QB could ask for.  We have a top tier offensive line. Big WRs that can get open and make plays.  A decent running game.   Over tha past couple of years we have really put enough players in position to help him.  He has to be the guy to step up and utitlize his players. 2. Jaelan Phillips, Just because of the massive contract we gave him.  He has to be the leader of the pass rush.  He has to be in double digit sacks or the money isn't worth it.  He has to bring Scourton and the rest of the group to the top. 3. Ejiro Evero, Two years ago he had the statically worst defense in NFL history but was given a reprieve because we focused primarily on the offensive side of the ball for Young.  Last year we improved and we just didn't have enough to stop elite QBs.  This year he has been given just about everything a defensive coordinator could ask for.  IMO he has 4 cornerbacks that have impressed this offseason.  He received solid help for Brown with Hunter and Phillips. Our weakest area, LB Corp, we signed Lloyd to solidify that group.  With all the tools he has this season he needs to show why we kept him after 2024.  IMO he has no excuses this season.   Lastly, IMO is X. Legette. He has shown sporadic flashes but nothing to justify being a first round pick.  The WR room is stacked this season and any number of players from that group could make the 53 man roster. XL is going to have to show out this preseason.  At minimum, he performs well enough to possibly get a trade to a team needing a WR.  I think with T-Mac, Coker and Brazzell in the mix for the top three position we would be wise to utilize the remaining WR spots for players with a larger ceiling than XL.  Training Camp and Preseason will sort them out and IMO if XL doesn't flat out show out he's done in Carolina.  Feel free to add to this list.  And of course, your opinion.
