Mario Williams moving to LB

Recommended Posts

I'm sure Ron Rivera would be more then happy to swap Smitty for Super Mario....

:smilielol5:

They should get what they can for Smitty. In a few years they won't even be able to get Luigi for him.

Mario could be a beast in a 3-4. It will be interesting.

Their front 7 was pretty damned solid i don't understand switching to a 3-4.

I believe its the way of the future, that and Nickel & dime defenses predominantly.

I like Williams at OLBer, hey remember when Peppers was thinking of joining a 3 - 4 team. Monster.

Except nobody knew how Pep would fair in a 3-4 defense...

Even LeMarr Woodley and James Harrison have to cover a TE multiple times in a game. Thinking about Pep or Mario Williams covering a TE on a somewhat regular basis makes me ....

I love it.

He is freakish enough to rush from the edge, and big enough to go down on the ground and be a 5 tech when in nickel or dime.

It's the best way to keep your best D player on the field.

Or remove him from a scheme that he excels in...

Didn't matter. He is under contract, the owner/GM/coach decided they needed to go 3/4 after having a horrible run trying to get the 4/3 down pat. He is their best D player, and IMO is probably a better all around player than Andre Johnson, but whatever.... They have to keep him on the field, and keep him happy. He can't use his skillset as a 5 tech DE, so the only option is to move him to OLB.

Also if you haven't noticed Manning 1 struggles tremendously with 3/4 D's.

Peppers is just as strong & athletic as any TE in the NFL. If he can chase down a RB on the opposite side of the field I'm sure he can cover a TE.

Just imagine Peppers rushing the QB as a LB off the end.

Yea... I tend to agree with you... Fix your secondary and other issues, don't change the scheme that forces you to change what your All-Star DE does for you on the defensive side of the ball.

You know playing the 4-3 DE he is a beast... but going to a 3-4... who knows??? He's been practicing, perfecting, and executing his techniques well at his position... Too change now.... Risky, and I don't believe it is going to help their defense that much... Will see.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
