Cam and the Shotgun formation

just because a play starts from the shotgun, it doesn't make it a spread. Auburn used 2 backs(Dyer and McCalebb, not to mention FB/H- Back Eric Smith) on just about every single offensive snap last year. there's no reason that the Panthers couldn't do the same with Williams and Stewart.

Ok, after reading the 1st page of this topic, let me get this straight -- We have the PROVEN NFL record-setting RB tandem of DW and Stewart (2 years agoi when everyone was healthy, which our OL are supposed to be once we get started), and we are going to run a spread offense with 3 or 4 wideouts so we can make up for our new QB's POTENTIAL inability to run the offense from under center, to rush this inexperienced (NFL experience) unproven rookie onto the field to play the NFL's hardest schedule in a season where potentially we may not have much training, only 1 pre-season game before the start of the season?

Yup, makes perfect sense to me....

Once the Labor dispute is over and FA opens up, why don't we just go ahead and trade DW and Stewart while we are dealing Snitty. we have Mike Goodson, who did well last year, we could probably get Reggie Bush (a receiving threat as RB) real cheap now, and we could pick up a couple more WRs just in case.... We could get a couple more draft picks for next year to boot.

I am assuming the discussion regarding using the shotgun was just occassionally to get Newton on the field / get him some experience...right?! :(

All I am saying is that the spread offense is spreading. Cam knows how to run it, so why not use it? You don't need 5 WRs to run the spread. Just 3 or 4 guys who want the ball and are willing to go get it.

You can have 2 backs and still have 3 WRs. I would think someone like Snitty would be able to excel in the slot. Move him, or whoever is in the slot, around so he isn't stationary on every play. I like having some motion on offense, it gives the D something to think about. And thinking slows people down.

I don't need swag, don't care if it is lame, I like it. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!

you missed the point.

Oh, I am so sorry. I didn't realize there was an actual point to all this. I thought it was just a bunch of football starved people droning on about things they haven't a chance of making happen.

If Rivera asked me, I would tell him to coach Cam up with all do diligence. Because I am of the mind set that Cam is going to be something special when everything clicks for him.

It may happen that Cam is one of the best, or of course he could be another Ryan Leaf. I just happen to feel Cam has too much God given talent, and an inner drive, not to be successful. And I am definately looking forward to watching it all unfold.

I hope that clarifies my point. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!

It's a common mistake these days to think "shotgun" automatically equals "spread". In reality, the shotgun formation's been around since the days of Tom Landry.

Would it be a good idea for Newton? I'd probably give it a shot. Early on, you'll probably see opposing DCs stacking the box and throwing a heavy rush at Newton from his front side to flush him out to where he's not as comfortable throwing (that's been the most effective tactic used against Vick).

Shotgun gives him a little more room to see that coming but doesn't really nullify it. Protection's the most important thing there.
