Charlotte Bobcats guard Gerald Henderson is expected to miss four to six months while recovering from surgery to repair a torn labrum in his left hip.

Surgery was scheduled today in Vail, Col., after a specialist at the Steadman Clinic there discovered the problem. Henderson sought treatment for ongoing pain in his left knee. Doctors concluded his hip issue was affecting his knee.

"Gerald had some knee tendinitis issues this season, and the doctors have told us that fixing this congenital defect in his hip should alleviate those problems," general manager Rod Higgins said in a prepared statement. "The doctors also feel that addressing the hip issue now will help prevent the possibility of further damage in the future."

Dr. Marc Philippon was scheduled to perform the procedure on Henderson today, so that he could start the recovery process immediately. The Bobcats anticipate Henderson being ready for the start of training camp. That would be in early October, assuming an anticipated lockout of players by the NBA doesn’t delay opening camps.

The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the ball-and-socket mechanism of hips and shoulders. According to the Bobcats’ announcement, this injury is a "congenital issue’’ that has caused an impingement.

Henderson had bouts of pain in his knee throughout the season. Despite that, the former Duke star had a breakout the second half of his second NBA season, following the trade of Gerald Wallace to Portland.

Wallace’s departure moved Henderson into the starting lineup at shooting guard (with Stephen Jackson switching to small forward). Henderson thrived late-season, including a 32-point performance against the Orlando Magic April 6.

Coach Paul Silas praised Henderson’s improved jump shot and suggested Henderson spend the off-season making similar improvement in his ballhandling.

Bobcats owner Michael Jordan said at the season’s conclusion that he sees potential in Henderson to be an All-Star sometime in the next three seasons

Not good news, but I guess if you have to be out 4-6 months, no better time to start than the beginning of May. Get better Hendo, we'll need ya.

hopefully he'll come back better than ever. he really did step up this season. I knew he was athletic enough to compete in the NBA coming out of Duke, the only question was his jumper. If he can continue hitting his shots, I really don't care if he improves his ball handling. He'll be fine.

    • I presented that scenario because this is a home game and we seemed to have improved in some capacity in that area as of recently. The problem with the possibility of sweeping the Bucs is this team has had a habit of quickly falling victim to momentum shifts. The Bucs are coming off a bitter loss the same as the Panthers but the Bucs have a much better proven track record this time of year and they have performed when the pressure is on unlike our Panthers. We have a shot against the Seahawks here in BOA but that is a matchup that could quickly get out of hand because they are a well coached team and that goes back to the momentum shifts I mentioned. I just don't see this team beating the Bucs in their stadium to close the season. Tall order to say the least.
    • I’d give it another year for Sanders and Evans, I don’t much care what you do with Tremble’s spot. Let him have another year or maybe replace him. Haven’t looked at his contract so that may be the determining factor.
    • Following the crazy up down pattern we finish 9-8 with an improbable sweep of TB, and lay an egg in the home playoff game.  I don’t know if I can sign on to sweeping TB but I suppose it’s possible, they aren’t really that good this year.    ps I can buy beating TB Sunday and losing to Seattle.  Then it just gets to can you fluke one game. Any given Sunday. So we’ll see.
