WRs drop percentage

people keep on saying that braylon edwards is overrated, but the last couple years he's really gone quite a ways in improving himself and living up to whatever hype is there.

the dude is a good receiver. pay attention to what he has done since '08.

I haven't paid much attention to Edwards and you could be right. I was just trying to make a post stating why I don't want Moore.

i understand about moore. there's no denying his skills, though.

i don't care how much a player whines as long as he can get the ball and get it down the field. if we manage to pick him up...then he'll be our whiner.

Smitty's dropoff over the last 2 seasons has been noticeable. His speed isn't there like it used to be, he was getting outthrown and diving for balls he used to catch in stride, and he did seem to drop quite a few catchable balls.

Who knows, maybe his heart just hasn't been in it since 2008. I could see why.

This type of thread, and ensuing dialog, is the reason I have been a longtime member of this site (and the bewbies). As a homer I would love the great Steve Smith to always be a panther, but I have also noticed a decline in his performance. I would think many things have contributed to this: his age, attitude, the play of team mates, and coaching just to name a few. With the proper compensation, I hope Smitty can go where he feels the fire that makes him great, here or elsewhere. As much as I will miss him as a Panther, I still believe he's an absolute incredible athlete, that lays it all out there, and I hope he finds success. It would be great though, if he found it with us.

Go Panthers

When you look at the number of 'catchable passes' Smith ranks 4th lowest from that universe of 30 receivers (I don't have the sub to get the whole list). Whenever your opportunities are limited, each drop is more statistically significant. However, I think you missed my point entirely.

A receiver is more than just the 'good hands' guy. He has a responsibility to read the defense just like the QB, he has to run block on the misdirection, etc. If your receiver is explosive enough, he will force the defensive coordinator to change his defense to more effectively cover that threat and that opens up opportunities elsewhere on the field. The dropped pass stat is important for Fantasy Football geeks, but it isn't determinative in real life. Our desire to retain Smitty will not be determined by this stat, nor should it be.

No I think you missed the point. This article, nor any reasoned person commenting on it is trying to use this as a measuring stick for Smith's decline. He is still our most dangerous receiver, however with each passing year he is becoming that possession slot guy due to his declining speed. Looking at Welker, it appears hands aren't the most important attribute, but it is a trend that is concerning. As I stated I would guess that there was a certain lack of concentration and effort at points this season which is likely going to contribute to him dropping passes he would normally haul in.

Don't want either. Edwards is just overrated, and Moore is the whiniest crybaby in the division. He pouts after every single play. You can see him do it in on TV, but when you see a game live is when it's really bad. He runs and cries and pouts to the refs and screams and freaks out when they don't throw the flag on literally almost every passing play. I have literally seen him do this live twice-against us and the 49ers, and I see him do it on TV all the time. He's a total girl and I don't want him here.

Smith doesn't whine and bitch all game long? All season long?

I have never really understood why he was always seen as over-rated. He steadily improved to his monstrous breakout year in 2007. Since then he has shown to one again steadily improve after dipping in 2008. He isn't amongst the elite in the league, but if Smith does move on, he might be a great #1 guy (and he is #1 quality), allowing LaFell and Gettis to duke it out for the other starting spots.

Does he have any off field trouble?
