thoughts about slot receivers....

In Norvs O the big boys are on the outside, with Gates at the TE position, and any number of schmoes at the slot. Buster Davis, Naanee, and Crayton were usually there, but Ajiritutu (sp) came in at the end when they were dealing with injuries.

They account for a small % of the O, as Norv likes to push it down the field, throw to the TE in mismatches, and throw out of the backfield.

NE and NO both utalize the slot way more than you can expect us to.

good points. you have to be able to do well in the middle of the field, but the emphasis is going long downfield and running the ball to keep defenses honest.

NE and NO both have more of a pure spread offense that just gets the ball out wherever they can.

who says it has to be a big physical receiver? smitty would be a huge mismatch on any nickelback in the league right now, diminished skills or not. if we can get a reliable number one and two that could handle the outside, i guarantee you we'll see 89 in the slot if he's still with us.

All teams don't put there 3rd best corner at the nickel position. When Captain comes in the game we usually line him up on the outside, and use Marshall as the nickelback. Green bay does the same thing with Charles Woodson!

And there are even changes to be done during the game itself. By running some plays and figuring out what the defense is doing, you can change personnel around.

All that relies on is the players knowing the plays, and Cam being aware of where his receivers are, and what defensive formation the defense is in.

I really wish Gettis could turn into a number 1. That would solve a lot of problems for Smith, since he is known to be the only true WR threat on the team. Smith can't go on much longer being double, triple covered. He is awesome, no doubt, but you can only do so much when the defense knows he is the only guy that can burn them.

As for the slot, Smith needs to be there. Depending on the opponent, it could be wise to throw Lafell there for the height, hands, physicality. AE hopefully can get his game going and he or Pilares could be there for the speed.

All I want is a decent deep threat passing game. The Panthers haven't had one in years, because of the loss of Moose, and Smith being shutdown deep. For the run game to do well, deep throw needs to be a threat. For short gains on 3rd down, deep throw needs to be a threat.

I agree...if Smith plays for us this year that is where I see him playing. We are going to need to pick up a number 1 wr.
