what is the point of keeping ineffective players who don't fit your scheme on a roster....cheap or not? you can get cheap players with more long term potential to fill the spot...

What FAs or alternatives fit the scheme better? The point is, somewhere this guy had a degree of potential, why give up on him already when he isn't expensive to keep.

We aren't exactly going to find three Cam Newton's (or at least playing style), so somewhere there is going to be a discord between scheme and abilities.

Have you seen the scheme yet? I haven't. I can only speculate based on Cleveland and San Diego which may or may not be accurate. If he sits behind Newton, I think he is getting paid about right for a backup.

Chud's scheme isn't a mystery nor are the basics of his offense.

He is going to require a QB be able to sit in the pocket, hand it off, sell the play action and go downfield......

that doesn't mean he wont' tweak things for a QB but overall we know what Chud does. What we saw in Clev was Chud's offense. The core of that ain't gonna change.

I think I do know what he will do as well but lets see. At this point I wouldn't dump Clausen until we see what he can do with Shula working with him, we see who else we can get as a backup, and see if he has any trade value. At this point we have to pay the salary if we dump him anyway so we have very little to lose.

If there are 5 or 6 guys who are better than Marshall then they will get picked ahead of him and be paid more than Marshall so your last statement makes no sense.

As for the rest, it isn't that I think we will be great without an influx of talent, it is that I don't think anyone sees us as one or two players away from contending so there is little pressure to get high priced FAs. We just had a 2-14 year and have a new coach. There are few expectations and therefore little pressure to spend wildly other to sign our core players. So it isn't that I think we will be that great, it that I think we will continue to build through the draft and supplement with lesser known cheaper guys.

re: marshall...i was more thinking of what he's expecting or wanting from the market. we've got a hole to fill there either way since marshall isn't under contract.

i don't think either marshall or the panthers have any desire to continue that relationship. we'll have to spend money there anyway. it would probably take a good bit of money to keep marshall around and be productive and happy...probably more than it would take for someone as good or a little better.

sorry if that doesn't make sense.

i agree to an extent that not much will be expected in this first year, but they will be expected to win a good few more games than they did last year. i can see them being really frustrated with less than 5. they need to put as much in place as they can to help out rivera and to make up for the clusterf*ck that was last year. it's not like i'm saying that we will be going out and bringing in a bunch of big name guys. they can bring in a top 5 FA DT and a top 5 FA CB and sign their core and their rookies and still have the ability to add decent depth to the OL and LBs as needed. i just think you have a gloomier view of the condition of things than they really are. it isn't ideal, but the roof isn't falling in.

i don't think we are all that far off in the way we see things, actually. i'm not expecting playoffs for a couple years. i think we have a lot of talent on this team and a ton of potential here already. i just feel like this year we are going to be able to bring in a couple more key pieces to help this team get where it should be and put it on a faster track to success.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
