OL stats last year - Clausen just sucked

Dont forget to mention the fact that opposing defenses were stacking 10 in the box instead of the usual 8 in the box. All defenses mostly played us with one safety.

I'm confused

They had 10 in the box with 1 safety, meaning they didn't play with corners?

Or they played with 1 corner and no safeties?

I bet they were triple covering Smith, had 10 in the box, 2 safeties up top and a spy on DWill right?

The truth is they likely had 8 in the box at the most, unless we ran a 1 WR set.

Most times they probably had 7 in the box with a safety dropping down once he read run.

i have blasted Smitty for what he did to Clausen.....and I support trading him if he is unwilling to suffer through the peaks and valleys of having a rookie/young QB this year.

I defend Clausen on several issues.....most just want to point out I am a 100% hater. I just think Hurney drafting him for an unknown future coach was bad news for Clausen and our team. Not all QBs can have success on all 32 rosters.....people overlook how important it is that a QB fit's what a team does.

Clausen has good qualities but overall I don't think you will see them in Fox's or Chud's offense.

This was a very sound statement. Doesn't come through to me in most of what you write but if this is how you really feel I more or less agree with it. My biggest disappointment last year was that Clausen did not have the capital of a $50mm #1 pick QB like Bradford and was expected to conform to a system rather than establish one around him. The good news about Cam, and for Cam, is that the system WILL be built around him no matter what the coaches say. The offense will be as simple as it needs to be.

exactly....that is a nice way of putting my main issue with the Clausen debacle. I know it comes off that I hate the kid but mainly I feel bad for him.....it was a bad marriage from the start and it is hard to fault Clausen or really Fox for it IMO.

I have always said I think Clausen could be decent......but he needs an offense that plays to his strengths and not weaknesses. He has to go to a team he fits....a team simply can't make there offense fit him (he isn't an investment you can justify it).

Rivera/Chud can cater to Cam if they want to totally revamp Chud's playbook around a guy the franchise has invested their future in.

Jimmy Clausen played terrible. The coaches didn't fumble snaps. The coaches didn't turn left to hand off when the play was to the right. The coaches didn't make him panic causing him to run for his life only to gain 2 1/2 yards. The coaches didn't cause him to hold the ball to long and get sacked or just get sacked right after the snap because they didn't teach him how to move in the pocket. Who thew passes that were knocked down at the line of scrimmage? Who threw the ball out of bounds more than down field? Who fumbled snaps and hand offs? Who threw pick after pick after pick. Yes, John Fox sucks.....But Jimmy was terrible Period Don't blame the coaches

The funny thing about this is perspective. Bradford had a successful year in St. Louis in a sytem built around his dink and dunk passing, but made almost all of the same mistakes. The very same week that Clausen threw a pick to Peppers at the line of scrimmage, Bradford threw an INT to Suh. Bradford's #1 receiver by a factor of 2 was his running back Jackson. When you are winning games, these types of things are dismissed as a rookie learning the game. And when you aren't winning games, they still come up six months later ;)

Bradford also played in one of the worst divisions the NFL has seen in a long time......I think that aided in him appearing more successful.

The coaches didn't prepare him, or any other QB we had last year. If your going to call for no more Jimmy, then also recognize Moore sucked imo worse, and St. Pierre had that one TD but that was it. Everybody sucked, so if Jimmy gets cut, then I think we should just cut every QB that was on the roster last year.

Moore didn't suck worse and Moore wasn't put in a horrible position.....the NYG for example....Moore was put into position that game to destory NY. Moore flat out missed throws and made horrible throws.

BSP rolled off the couch in put in a respectable game all things considered where his WRs and RBs didn't come through for him early in that game. For 3 and 1/2 quarters BSP played surprisingly soild.

b/c Fox didn't want to invest his energy in a long term wildcard player like AE....doesn't mean he didn't prepare his team to play Foxball. Jimmy didn't fit.

    • Except it takes those QB's a few years to develop because they needed to learn the mental side of the game and have it catch up to their physical attributes. Bryce was supposed to be a QB savant who already had a fully developed mental side of the game and that was going to make up for his lack of physical ability.  And his lack of NFL level QB physical traits has been clear as day to anyone who has watched him the last 3 years, mainly, he just doesn't have an NFL arm, he can't zip the ball into tight spaces or throw on a line down the field like is needed at this level.
    • Don’t recall seeing many of his interviews but what strikes me is that he engages and goes in depth. Even with the cliche answers as referenced by OP come across somewhat thoughtful.  Very likable personality despite being someone who can crush an average person like I can crush a paper cup. I knew Motons mother had a career at MSU but was looking on the google and found that Mushin Muhammad personally knew Motons grandfather.   His late grandfather was a professor at MSU.   Cool guy.  Interesting family and small world.
    • I think people aren’t patient enough with Young. It can take a few years for a QB to develop. Look at Darnold, Baker and most recently Daniel Jones.   he hasn’t been able to put up big passing numbers either cause of how much we run the ball. You can tell our coaching staff still hasn’t took the training wheels off Bryce and let him go all out. We’ve had some pretty bad receivers as well. We finally got a true number one last year and look how much Bryce improved. Still we didn’t really have any depth behind TMac. Coker was hurt for a lot of the year and XL was our #2. How many big plays or TDs has XL dropped? I think this year can be the year we see Bryce able to hit his stride. If not then we can start looking for another qb but I just ask people to be patient.
