Gantt and the Observer on Jimmy Clausen, Jonathan Stewart, and Charles Johnson

not being able to cut back could a result of a recovering heel...or he just doesn't need to to be effective.

pff's elusiveness rating for 2010

the 2009 season is linked in that article also.

stewart is a hell of a lot more versatile than people give him credit for. when he gets a full season under his belt as the starter to show it, all this nonsense talk can end.

If Williams stays he may never get that chance. It doesn't really matter who is named the starter neither of them is going to approach the carries of a starter. Then Goodson will get some touches too. Tricky situation.

Also he was healthy in 2010 but with the O-line playing the way it was it really limited his effectiveness, Williams can still be effective when the going gets tough. I don't want it to look like I'm criticizing Stewart so heavily, I like him a lot. I just think Williams is a good compliment. Goodson fumbles and isn't as agile as Williams, I still want williams on the team.

up until week 7 last season when the line was in shambles, stewart averaged 6-7 attempts a game.

really?

he may have been healthy, but you can't sprinkle him in and offense and expect him to perform at a high level.

i've never been one to compare goodson to williams. i'm not sold on goodson.

give me williams/stewart/sutton all day long.

I don't think that's a valid excuse at all. Getting 4-5 more carries isn't going to make a difference, when he did start getting the ball he still didn't improve. Not until the team around him got better was he able to start being productive. Williams still was able to squeak out an effective performance even with the team in total chaos.

I haven't seen him be the catalyst for success enough to hand over the starting job on a level of 25 carries a game. I think he's perfect where he is right now splitting carries.

We didn't really lose much when he was injured in 2010 either. I'm sure he would have helped, but that's an unknown. It sure would have helped to have Williams too.

I think it all comes back to the fact that Stewart just isn't as versatile as Williams. Williams can do Stewart's job, but Stewart isn't going to be able to run the wildcat or cut back all the way across the field when the defense is clogging lanes.

Based on his overall body of work Stewart can't carry the team when the going gets tough. Maybe it will happen this year. Williams didn't look all-pro his first few seasons.

Team is something like 14-3 when J-Stew gets over 15 carries.

And it still remains true that we haven't necessarily needed Jonathan Stewart to be that guy.

Jonathan is a very good running back and almost every team in the NFL would be happy to have him on the team.

I don't know if you get some sick pleasure out of down-grading even our team's good players, but you just sound silly.

There's no reason to be immature, stay on topic.

The stat about Stewart getting 15 carries seems pretty good but I'm sure a lot of those games we're in tandem with Williams. If you don't count the games this year since we were so bad I think his starting record would be pretty good. We played a good mixture of bad/good teams in 09 during his nice run. In 2010 his limitations showed. Stewart is a one cut guy. If the holes clogged he's not usually going to find a new one. I'm no expert but that's just what I think.

I don't think Stewart is a low caliber back and I'm not degrading him. He has many strengths. But I think he's better off in a two back system and while Goodsoon has nice skills he fumbles too much. He can be shut down easier than Williams. Since we are going to rely so heavily on the run game in Cam's first few years I don't think it's unreasonable to have a logjam of talent at the runningback position.

Anybody that takes away from what I've written that I'm attacking Jonathan Stewart for no reason is interpreting it to the extreme and adding in a narrative of their own.
