As I sit and watch ESPN make national headlines out of the news that former Auburn quarterback Cam Newton is quickly winning over his teammates with the Carolina Panthers with his work ethic and willingness to be a part of the team, all I can do is laugh.

Laugh at the media who were so quick to jump on a young man and judge his character without ever knowing him or speaking to him. Laugh at the NFL analysts who said there were questions about his leadership ability and his desire to play the game.

From the time Newton stepped foot on the Auburn campus that’s all he ever did. From spring practice, through summer conditioning and voluntary team workouts, to two-a-days and throughout the 2010 season all Newton did was lead by example time and time again.

The first indication I had that Newton was going to be something special was last summer. Watching a summer football camp at Auburn with hundreds of kids in attendance, I was hot and bordering on miserable. Throw in that it was a Saturday and I could think of many things I would have rather been doing that on the hot and steamy practice fields with temperatures unusally high for early in the morning.

When the rains came it sent people racing for the indoor facility, but not Newton and several young wide receivers he had coaxed to work out with him at 7 a.m. on a Saturday. They kept at it while the rain fell and from that point forward my expectations of Auburn’s chances for a high level of success in 2010 began to rise.

In the season opener he ran for 171 yards and two touchdowns on just 15 attempts and completed 9-14 passes for 186 yards and three touchdowns. It was just a glimpse of what the season would hold for Newton has he finished the year with 50 total touchdowns as he won just about every major award in college football.

He did all that with probably more distractions surrounding him than any player in college football history.

Now ESPN is making headlines out of a story that Newton is impressing his teammates and others at Carolina in voluntary workouts while the league is in a lockout. That’s not news, it’s a network still trying to cover itself after time and time again questioning his ability and character.

Much of the draft talking leading up to and following his selection was about why Newton wasn’t a good choice for the Panthers, why he would struggle, why he couldn’t do this, why he probably wouldn’t do that. What ESPN and the rest of the doubting media fail to realize is that Newton has heard it all time and time again.

He heard it out of high school when teams told him he couldn’t throw well enough to play quarterback. He heard it from Florida when John Brantley was named The Golden Calf of Bristol’s successor in waiting. He heard it from media wondering if he could throw the ball well enough for Auburn to win when defenses stopped Auburn's running game. Finally he heard it from draft pundits questioning his skill set translating to the NFL.

So far he has not only answered the bell, but he’s smashed it with his play on the field. Now I’m not saying Newton is the next Peyton Manning or Tom Brady. I’m not guaranteeing a Hall of Fame career or even a Pro Bowl career, but I can guarantee one thing. The guys that questioned Newton’s work ethic, his ability to lead a team and his hunger to win are as wrong as they’ll ever be, and that’s saying something.

Oh Jeez

Only about his teamwork, work ethic, and desire to play football. Not whether he will be a hall of fame QB.

about his work ethic.....and he's right. the crap coming out before the draft about his work ethic, leadership, and competitive nature were just that.....crap. those people are/were wrong about Cam Newton's work ethic. what's so hard to comprehend about that(even with all of the typos in the article)?

uh good article or did you mean extremely defensive/bias article that you thought illuminated your personal thoughts? :)

the good articles are usually objective IMO but this was a nice read.

I am tired of reading though I want proof and worries put to rest.

      It is all confusing and layered. SB is the cash you get very soon within weeks or in simple terms, its what you get to sign the paper work. Players and agents can agree on contract but what to "wait" to sign......teams don't like that cause you can "Carlos Boozer" yourself. In order to get that ink dry, while keeping the contract the same, portion it as a bonus to "sign" and get the funds with ________ .   * But Ive seen worded contracts that split the SB or a 20% to a later date. The beans counters can fill in the details about why certain dates are better and save the team money.. Theres tricks to the trade and accounting is full of them.    Ugh another big layer, is SB can be used to manipulate cap and players. Ill try to give a example that makes enough sense. Believe it or not having a owner like Tepper is a cheat code for this. He has cash in hand, where as Mark Davis had problem making pay roll and had to move the team to Vegas....... Tepper can give you 100,000,000 SB right now and the team can spread out the cap hit. Another owner doesn't have or want to give the player 100,000,000 in cash, but offered the same guaranteed contract in roster bonuses fully guaranteed over the next few years........ Which one do you want??? Everyone wants the money now, not before another inflation waves hits in 2 years. So it does 'pay" to have a owner like tepper that's able to have real cash on hand, while it also works GREAT for cap help. Heres a good video, if you can stand coked up pat and mask look-a-like AJ

      I don't know. CMC is like others and may have lip serviced that line of " I had no plan or wanted to leave Carolina" I think he even said he bought a house too and wanted this to be home.   Here's what I heard- In a way Panthers org gave him a test and he didn't "fight" back. They approached CMC and told him they wanted to put him on IR since the "season" was over or out of playoff reach. CMC didn't fight it one lick and agreed. They secretly wanted him to kept playing or want to, but there was no kickback. I honestly don't know if its real or not, 5th hand information type deal doing on. Yes he had bruises and pains, but was able to play...... but went along with Panthers staff. Odd to be playing games with star players, but whatever....   Plus the staff doctors found out about his tendinitis and there was nothing to fix it. Even with him missing time, it was the best move to trade him before he got inflamed constantly.    Lastly, its mostly time a combo of stuff, Fitterererere did not sign him to be the highest paid RB. That was classic Marty "give me a" herniay doing. GMs have different values on roster spots and rumor was Fitterererer was one that didn't want to pay RBs. For all his faults, he's right about that......
