NY motorcyclist dies on ride protesting helmet law

deciding to ride a motorbike is a dumb idea?

Of course it is.

Let me put it this way. I'm making up numbers but I seem to recall these being accurate.

Riding a motorcycle without a helmet is 40 times more dangerous than riding a car.

Wearing a helmet reduces that to 30 times more dangerous.

Some people seem to thing that by reducing the stats from 40 to 30 they are being safe.

My point is you are doing something that is much much more likely to get you killed or vegetable whether you protect your brain or not.

sure, but you can make those stats for so many things that at the end of the day, all you do is sit in your house, too afraid to leave! Everything comes with some sort of risk. Millions of people ride millions of miles on bikes without ever having an incident.

I agree but that isn't my point. I'm against government telling me what to do whether it is wear a helmet or whatever and i support cyclists.

I'm just pointing out that people are so adamant about wearing helmets when the biggest danger factor is the motorcycle itself. If you are worried about a loved one's safety ask them to ride in a car. Getting on a motorcycle is much more correlated with death than simply using a helmet.

I'm not singling out sunbunny FYI

The biggest danger isn't the bike, it's the idiots in cars. You make it sound like it's the bike/er's fault.

BTW, cyclists ride bicycles. I don't know anyone that rides a bike that refers to themself as a cyclist. LMAO

I am not assigning fault for any individual accident as I agree that the biggest culprit in motorcycle accidents is cars at fault.

All I am saying is that the easiest way to avoid being involved in a motorcycle fatality is not to get on a motorcycle. Helmet or not it is one of the riskiest things a human can do.

Maybe I should stop walking since there is a chance of me tripping and falling.

This is a bad analogy.

Everyone needs to walk just like (most) everyone needs to drive.

A better analogy would be to compare a guy who walks down a safe path vs a guy who walks down a path where he is 40x more likely to get bitten by a flying shark with lasers just because he is allowed or it might shave a minute off the trip.

Pretending shin pads makes the trip a safe one is silly

totally disagree! People jump out of perfectly good airplanes all the time...hell...people get into seeminly perfectly good airplanes even more...pretty dangerous. Get in a car....walk across the street....so many other things out there that are equally or more dangerous than jumping on a bike!

My Motorcycle is the only way I travel. I actually really dislike being in a car, and I really dislike riding my motorcycle with a heavy contraption on my head. The only time I wear my helmet is if I am going to a state it is required or if it is really cold or raining. (full face helmet) If I crash and die because I did not wear a helmet, then I died having a blast! Because that is what I do when I ride. I have fun. I will never live my life as if I was afraid to die. If I did then I would never do anything. So it is not stupidity, it is my choice to be free and live life on the edge.

I respect that you don't want to wear a helmet, but I'm still damn glad my bro had his on last night. He wouldn't be here today if he hadn't. He was wearing his shell instead of his full face for some reason, though. Usually at night he wears his full face.

Man my bro would have been pissed if it was a deer that took him out.

I am glad he is ok. A lot of the guys I ride with choose to wear helmets and we dont really judge one way or the other. We do practice very safe riding though. It is something we preach at every ride. It is dangerous but so is life itself.

He also would not have been in a situation if had chosen to get in a car. It is pretty amazing that your brother nearly died last night and you have no concern about his riding a motorcycle

I never said I don't want to wear a helmet and I am not sure where you got that. I drove a bike for 6 years and wore a full faced helmet everytime. I just didn't kid myself that being on a bike was safe.

None of those things are more dangerous than jumping on a bike except parachuting and that is an extreme sport not a method of transportation.

But it isn't my point.

yes, because people never die when the car they are in hits a deer. riding is a lifestyle, of which you obviously do not partake.

i have had good friends die in bike accidents and ride more in their honor rathef than less due to fear

    • Per Bill Barnwell  Broncos part ways with a CB on the roster bubble Broncos get: 2026 seventh-round pick Panthers get: CB Damarri Mathis The Broncos have a rare problem among NFL teams: too many cornerbacks. ESPN's Jeff Legwold projects they could move on from Mathis, who was very good as a rookie in 2022 before losing his starting job after the defense's slow start in 2023. He played just 27 defensive snaps after Week 6 that season and 80 more across 10 games in 2024. With the Broncos using their 2025 first-round pick on cornerback Jahdae Barron, they could justify moving on from Mathis, who might not be active on game days even if he sticks around. Mathis' best season came with defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero in Denver, and he hasn't been able to reach those same heights since Evero left for Carolina. The Panthers are set with Jaycee Horn, Mike Jackson and nickel corner Chau Smith-Wade as their three starting corners, but Mathis could push the 28-year-old Jackson and serve as Carolina's primary reserve on the outside. Mathis is owed $3.4 million in 2025, so Denver might essentially buy a draft pick by eating some of that cash, similar to what the Commanders did when they sent running back Brian Robinson Jr. to the 49ers.
    • They can get fuged for a 6th and 7th. Doesn't make sense for us for anything less than a 4th and them paying a majority of his salary.
