Sione Fua could be a Monster in our Defense.

i thought coefield was pretty much exclusively a 3-tech.

He played nose tackle as a rookie and started all sixteen games. He can play both the 3 technique and the nose. When he came out in the draft he had a 465 lb bench press and a 660 lb squat. He is strong enough to anchor the middle and quick enough (4.88 40) to get penetration.

I am still waiting to see if McDermott plays more of a straight up 4-3 or runs a 4-3 under/over. In either case I think we will move guys around and use more penetrating 3 technique guys versus a 0 technique NT run stuffer in the middle who can't play against the pass. So for any of the guys to win the NT spot he will have to play the nose and the 3 technique equally as well. More like we used Jenkins under Fox. With the other teams in the division being big passing offenses, getting pressure on the QB will be at a premium. Not sure at this point how a rookie will stand up to double teams by veterans offensive players with equal size and lots more experience. The answer I suspect is not that well right off the bat.

If we are lucky enough to get Cofield or Mebane in free agency they will be our nose tackle no doubt. Also Corvey Irvin might decide to show up and play this year if he makes the squad.

true about what kind of d MD will run and i dont think he puts a prem on a 0 tech NT but looking back at what he had in philly i want to compare Fua to something like Hollis Thomas, or Broderick Bunkley but more athletic. Fua has a motor and can push that pocket, but i remember reading that McClain could anchor against the run just as good so it will be interesting to see.

i still got Fua ahead of McClain by just a few.

Lets not sleep on McClain.

A three-year starter at South Florida, the 6-foot-2, 297-pound McClain totaled 88 tackles, 7.5 quarterback sacks, and 17 tackles for a loss. Selected with the 65th overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, McClain is projected to be an instant starter on a Panthers’ defensive line that lacks depth.

Panthers third-round defensive tackle Terrell McClain is entering the NFL with a chip on his shoulder, reports Joseph Person of the Charlotte Observer.

I agree Mcclain is good, but he's better in rotation cause he gets tired easily, doesn't have the motor to keep going.

That is part of developing into an NFl player, better conditioning and ability to keep it going for a whole 20 game season counting preseason. If he wants to start he will have to work on his stamina and endurance.
