Cam Newton is likely to start at quarterback for the Carolina Panthers in 2011, and it's going to be absolutely ugly.

I don't care how good Newton looks in practice; he is still a rookie and a product of the spread offense at the college level. He is going to need time to develop.

More on the article at the link. Dunno if this has been posted or not.

Interesting to see someone outside of the Panthers close followers (and other, lesser followers of course) make a comment on Cam starting. A nice break from reading homers and other silly peoples making predictions. :3

So, it brings up the subject of starting a different QB.

Such as taking a gamble on Derek Anderson or Jimmy Clausen? The profit of it is simple, let our tougher games sail by (most of the first 5 or 6 games are going to be tough on our QB's) and then once Anderson and/or Jimmy does bad enough Cam starts with easier games. Or, Anderson or Jimmy proves to be good enough to start the rest of the season.

I know a lot of you guys are hell-bent on starting Cam week one, but rushing him into the starting position would be terrible. Look at what happened to Jimmy, many figured he'd be a solid starter but after being pushed into the starting role he flopped. However, neither Anderson nor Jimmy have showed themselves more reliable QB's for the starting position.

BleacherReport - For when the huddle threads are not rubbish enough.

I agree.

How in the hell can anyone post such garbage when the guy has only a few weeks of practice under his belt? If people anticipated him in coming in on short notice and performing like Payton Manning they are on crack.

I give the coaches credit to bring him when they feel it is appropiate in the regular season .

I stopped reading right there.

Bleacherreport?? Are you kidding me.. Bleacherreport?

BleacherReport - For when the huddle threads are not rubbish enough.

The thread isn't about the article, as the article simply made me think of how comfortable starting Anderson or Jimmy over Cam. Thus that is the question I asked. Ignoring the actual threads core because of a article from a specific place is silly.

If the coaching staff wants to start Cam Newton week 1, then I would support it as I trust them to ultimately make the best decision for the team. If they decide to start Clausen at the start of the season, then I'm fine with that as well.

You're comfortable starting Jimmy, or Anderson, over Cam? Trusting the coaching staff stops at one point. Did you trust Fox and the rest of his group rushing Jimmy in? Or even starting Jake in 2009 and not removing him quicker?

Until preseason starts its hard to get a feel on how any of them will perform.

Explain to me what exactly has this coaching staff done to not earn my trust. What's wrong in trusting what their doing until they prove that they aren't worthy of that trust. That's how I approach any new coaching staff. If that's not the way you approach things, you are certainly entitled to feel that way.

OK, I'll bite

More on the article at the link.

OMG Really? Tell me more about these "links" of which you speak. Are they not made of sausage?

Dunno if this has been posted or not.

It hasn't. And seeing as an article about Tony Pike's preference of sandwich bread gets triple posted within 5 minutes should reiterate what a steaming pile of dog turds you've just shared with us here.

Cause when I want to learn about the my team I don't want to hear from people who've been following for years and are actually going to practices. I want to hear from some schlub who finally understood this team after he read the Panther's section in the Lindy's NFL Preview he bought this May.

So, it brings up the subject of starting a different QB.

As does the fact that another QB is currently starting.

Yes! Let Jimmy take the live bullets against the likes of Arizona, Jacksonville and Washington so Cam can feast on the cupcakes that are the Colts, Bucs, Saints, Texans, and Falcons.

I know a lot of you guys are hell-bent on starting Cam week one, but rushing him into the starting position would be terrible. Look at what happened to Jimmy, many figured he'd be a solid starter but after being pushed into the starting role he flopped.

Agreed. Starting Jimmy Clausen week 3 versus the Bengals was perhaps the greatest mistake of John Fox's career.

However, neither Anderson nor Jimmy have showed themselves more reliable QB's for the starting position.

"I'd just like to finish my thread starting post by saying I had no real point to begin with."

Thanks again for participating. You're what makes this board.

Trust stops at a certain point with a new head coach for me.

    • I'd hold on to Walker - we have no OT depth at all. Freeling is a block of clay - all the tools are there and he appears to have a great attitude. He needs serious work on his technique to realise his potential though.
    • From my watch last night: They weren't trading out of 19 unless it was a daft offer once Freeling got there. They were clearly antsy to get Hunter - and Minnesota actually called to offer the trade down. They weren't trading out of the third round pick once Brazzell fell to it (and Canales would have been happy with him in the second round). They traded back a lot on Day 3 - even if Morgan 'Babe Ruth'd' it with Lee, Hecht and Wheatley; they clearly weren't the only guys they would have taken at those picks. I'm curious to know which player caused the reaction at the start of day 2 (Dan Morgan): "of course they'd pick him"
    • Watching this confirms that this staff and front office is super high on Monroe Freeling. I wouldn't be surprised if he's gotta a real chance to win the starting LT job in camp. If he does, we can look to flip Rasheed Walker to a contender desperate for tackle help.   As for Ickey I still really like him and wanna extend him but based on how the staff was talking about Freeling it might be time for ickey to start taking some practice sets at guard if he wants to stay here as we are gonna have to have figure out a solution for the contracts of Lewis and Hunt.  My preferred scenario for the Oline in 2027 is Freeling-Ickey-Hech-Lewis-Moton.
