Jimmy Clausen Starter vs. the Giants

Recommended Posts

As expected, Jimmy Clausen will start the Panthers' preseason opener against the New York Giants.

Clausen said coach Ron Rivera told him he would get the nod Saturday over No. 1 overall draft pick Cam Newton, who is expected to get plenty of work against the Giants.

Clausen has been getting the bulk of the first-team reps throughout training camp, so this was not a surprise. Rivera has said more than once that Newton would not be handed anything.

Eh, I figured as much.

In defense of OP, Rivera said as recently as yesterday that that depth chart was not official, and he only drew one up because he was obligated to. He at least wanted it to seem that the starting QB was not going to be determined until the last minute.

Makes perfect sense... would expect to see Cam get the majority of the snaps.

That's what I'm expecting, as well.

Jimmy is more of a known quantity than Cam is. So, they let Cam play a majority of the snaps, to really see how well he does against pressure, even if it is 2nd string.

They probably need to split snaps, both are basically rookies with Jimmy getting a completely new coaching staff and a new system. Just because Cam hasn't played yet doesn't mean he necessarily needs the majority of the snaps. Rivera doesn't have much from Jimmy or Cam yet.

I'm hoping both Jimmy and Cam shines...

Of course, I just like Jimmy a lot better. Plus, a lot of people simple "hate" Jimmy because of last years performance.

If it were me, I would start Jimmy, have him play in the 1st quarter, let Anderson play in the 2nd quarter, and have Cam play the whole second half.

It is no secret, Cam needs reps. A lot of them. Let him get his feet wet with the Giants 2nd or 3rd team defense, and give him the whole 2nd half.

But playing a half against 3rd and 4th stringers doesn't do much good either. I'd rather him play a quarter against 1/2nd stringers. I would hate for people to overreact if he does well against 3rd stringers.

    • PFF made it up just to make Bryce look better. Crazy right? Also I can’t believe you said he played “better.” Careful and you might let a compliment slip…. (kidding)
