My thoughts on the game

Nice impressions Jawney. There are a few things I would add/change:

Charly Martin, Gary Barnidge. They were both factors in the offense and were big on special teams.

Special teams were very good. Practicing STs at the beginning of practice seems to have paid off. Coverage teams were excellent on punt and KO, punt returns were great with Edwards, blocked FG. Nice night.

I want to see more from McClain and Burney. They show potential.

T. McClain showed good quickness--perfect for a 1 gap 3 technique in this D. DTs deserve game balls.

Jason Williams did not play--recovering from surgery last January. However, the second-year LB from USC will get some first team reps before he is cut. Looked good.

Why am I feeling that Olsen will catch 90 balls this season? Pro bowl.

The only glaring weakness I saw was at DE.I was expecting to get torched at the cb position. The DEs did not have sacks or hurrys plus they were running the ball at them.I assume it was because they were both undersized which made them easier to move around

The game will be replayed on NFL network at 1 pm today. One thing I want to watch is the kid from OK State. He was at LDE most of the third quarter and was going against the second team RT. However, he got penetration a few times and showed some good moves. I would like to see more from him.

Yeah, Norwood and Brown are not starting DEs. Never will be. They are situational pass rushers. When Hardy and Johnson get out there, different story.

We held our own vs their starters with 2 second string DEs, a rookie DT, 2 second string CBs, and 2 second team LBs. That is 6 reserves and a third round rookie, and a PS player who we cut last season. THe only starters from 2010 were Anderson and the safeties. They did great.

i wish jimmy would try to step up in the pocket more instead of running out.

lastly, i thought the special teams looked better this game if even though its just one game. sound tackling preventing huge returns possibly due to precision kicking and nice returns. hope it stays that way all year.

Yup Jimmy has happy feet because in college he got hit way to much

Cam's accuracy can get better with more reps, only problem i see is cam throwing off his back foot instead of step into the throw, which he did alot in college, I think its just instinct with him, going to take a long time to change that bad habit

    • Malcom Spence is the best player remaining, hope he’s there.
    • The era that you played in, and, more importantly, who you played with actually matters. Honestly, that's why these issues will be debated forever, as it's just difficult to say that this person or that person is better when you're discussing the passage of time. As for me, after Rice, Moss and maybe Megatron and T.O., there's probably a dozen or so guys that can be argued about to the cows come home. Personally, I'm not putting Fitz, Harrison, Johnson, Evans, or especially D-Hop, Jefferson, Chase or Hill definitely in front of Smitty (and Colston ain't even in the discussion). Context and all that stuff actually matters. Things like the triple crown matter.
    • Some of those guys? Yeah honestly you can.  I would 100% take Steve Smith over Larry Fitzgerald, Harrison, even Mike Evans. He is 100% a better player than those guys in his prime. If you look at the numbers Smith is historically under targeted in comparison to his contemporaries. He was only targeted 150 times or more only once in his career. Fitzgerald for example was targeted well above that 9 different seasons. Had Smith played with Peyton, Brady, Greatest Show on Turf, or even with Warner in Arizona he would broken records. His 2008 season was ridiculous accumulating 1400 yards in 13 games on less than 80 receptions. All time he also lost a season due to injury in 04, barely played WR as a rookie. Got robbed of 1k season with Clausen. Thats easily another 1800yds minimum that should have been tacked on to his #s. The only guys I’d say for certain are better than Smith are Rice, Moss, TO, Megatron, Julio Jones, Antonio Brown.
