Insanity workout

Okay, I've started feeling tons better over the last day or so. Additionally, I went back to the doc today and told him I've just had a lot of anxiety because I don't know what exactly "it" is that's going on with my back. I've been scared to pick up my kids, take them to the playground, walk down steps quickly, etc. because I don't know what will irritate my back, and I don't want to end up in bed unable to walk for days at a time again.

He said, whatever it is, an studies show an MRI won't do anything in regards to long-term outcome. He said I don't have any nerve issues, so that's why we don't really need to pinpoint what it is. He said because I'm relatively young, as long as I give it rest, I should be fine and fully recover. He said for even people who get surgery, that only alleviates the symptoms and pain associated with disc conditions, if that is what it is, so that does nothing in regards to long-term outcome.

Also, he said this time, I CAN return to Insanity, but I need to ease my way into it... Just build back up, but the worst thing I could do is nothing at all because of anxiety of injuring it again. So, I'm probably going to start jogging sometime this week. Maybe run steps after that. Start shooting basketball and some light drills after that in a week or so. Then I'm guessing in about 3-4 weeks, get back to Insanity.

I definitely feel better about things after this appointment though.

Anyway, this is yet another overly personal post brought to you by Proudiddy.

  • 2 weeks later...

I hate resurrecting old threads, but I just ordered Insanity yesterday.

Diddy, take care of your back! I ignored my nagging back aches and pains for years. The tipping point was when I was doing some sprints a few years ago and my back got unbelievably tight. The best way I know to describe it was that it felt like my back muscles were squeezing my lungs to the point that I couldn't inhale. That really isn't a good feeling.

Since that time, I've discovered that I have several bulging discs, osteoarthritis, some bone density loss, some other genetic problems.... along with the muscle spasms. I went through several months of neuromuscular physical therapy to get my body back in the right order. My range of motion was about half what it should have been. My physical therapist dumbed it down like this: a lot of my muscles "turned off."

The last few months, I've been easing into a routine; light, low impact exercises with some cardio thrown in. I think I'm at the point where I can atleast get into a daily routine again. I may be biting off more than I can chew with Insanity, but its worth a shot. In years past, I would spend 2-3 hours a night in the gym, along with a morning routine where I usually did cardio or some type of aerobic routine. Going from that workout to basically nothing ate me up inside. With my back feeling so much better now, I'm ready to get my feet wet again.

Thanks man! Congrats on buying the program, you'll love it! Just take care of yourself and listen to your body, which it sounds like you're already doing a great job of. I think my injury was a result of NOT listening to mine. When I played basketball in JUCO I remember I had a really bad flare up after doing a drop step in which all my weight came down on one leg going up for a block IIRC... It immediately felt weak and like I had a hard time holding myself up right... It was like my body was telling me to give it a break and it couldn't handle the load... I was having a lot of spasms too.

Well, that's the same feeling I started having about 2 weeks into Insanity. I have a hard time not going hard whenever I workout, so I was just felt like my back had to deal with it, lol. WRONG. I just started shooting ball again yesterday and some ball handling drills, practicing crossing over and cutting and such. Then tonight, I did a little more of the same and when I finished with drills (very light by the way), I jump roped on for 30 secs, then off for 30 secs, repeatedly for 10 minutes. My back feels tons better compared to when I hurt it and that first 2 weeks after, BUT, I'm having that same "spasmy" feeling after a few minutes of drills. So, I give myself a minute, let it rest and then go back, but I'm taking it much easier until I'm comfortable as the doctor suggested.

I plan on starting Insanity back in the next 2 weeks or so, I'm just trying to work my way back up comfortably. I also need to get my diet back right and stop drinking sodas like they're water, lol, which I picked back up after I've had this hiatus.

You'll love it though man, it is an awesome program, challenging, and it produces results!

My fiance is starting this today. I'm not sure if I should switch to this for a while or continue just lifting. I don't think I can handle both.

If you do go for both (I've always been a firm believer in twoadays) make sure to go with light weights during the 60 days. You'll be using different muscle groups and all that added strain can set you up for injuries.

I did the Day 1 Fit Test today. I'm not gonna lie... I think I thought too highly of my conditioning.

Yesterday I took the APFT with my reserve unit... those push up jacks were rough on me.

But I did notice one thing. I can't watch the screen while doing the exercises. If I do, I try to work at their pace and start sacrificing form. Don't do that. Look away, go your own pace and concentrate on the form. Keep that core tight.
