Rivera should hit the brakes on picking QB

Dan Marino would not be successful here unless our Oline starts opening holes and protecting. I don't know what is the problem. I gave our Oline a mulligan last year and now I am beginning to become a bit concerned.

IMO, Rico is right. QB that gives us the best chance to win should start. I think that's Clausen. I do think it might be Newton later in the season, but for now, I think it's Clausen. I don't think that is all that is going into the decision. There is much more going into this decision.

I also think it helps rookies to sit but that's a discussion for another thread.

edit: why are we saying Clausen went 1-16 again? also, why should he beat out a rookie if the rookie is ready to start? this is all so circular, it's like we're back to pre draft days.

Don't know that I'd go with the "best chance to win" logic this season.

Next season, for sure. But this is a transitional year.

Jimmy's game one critisms:

-Only threw to backs and TE's

-Looked jittery in the pocket

-Was decent with the starters, but didn't have to play with all backups

-Didn't try any deep balls

-Threw a pick 6

Cam in game Two-

-Only threw to backs and TE's

-Looked jittery in the pocket

-Was decent with the starters, but didn't have to play with all backups

-Didn't try any deep balls

So outside of the pick 6 which I highlighted Cam's performance almost mirrors Jimmy's with less accuracy and no TDs.

Yet Cam had a really good night, but Jimmy's last week was...meh. Hey, Cam didn't have a pick 6! I'm wondering how long that one play is going to be the hugger's straw man. Jimmy has led to two of three TD drives while Cam has none. Me thinks moving the ball and scoring touchdowns trumps ONE bad throw.

Ur question should be why does a one year vet's game looks remarkably like a rookie with only three weeks of practice? But I guess Cam is the one who has to rise to Clausen's level...Right?

Yep, and he hasn't got there yet. When he does, I'll be ready for Cam to start.

Wow, really?

People, our problems last night went way beyond the QB's. Other than maybe special teams, the other squads played like absolute crap, including our first team offensive line. I still have not seen a legitimate 2nd WR on the field, and if our defense can't get the ball back in the hands of our offense every now and then, we are in trouble. This is true whether it's Jimmy, Cam, or whoever as the QB.

Add to that the coaches performed like rookies last night, and still have much to learn.

Due to the lockout, we have been behind since day 1. It's not a normal preseason, and I don't believe it is imperative that we name our starter now.

Play the starters 3 quarters in the next game, and split the reps between Jimmy and Cam. Make your decision based on that game. If the team still looks like it did last night night, then start Clausen or DA. I don't want to ruin Cam by putting him in when the situation is untenable, or when he is not ready.

We absolutely have to find a good 2nd receiver in the meantime, along with help at the DT position. Without that, it is going to be ugly for whoever plays.

Not gonna happen, per Rivera last night.

Nor should it,in my eyes. You do that and you waste valuable reps with our young guns.

Developing a QB takes time...

Something must have happened to change Rivera's mind from his original statement that the lead QB's position was available to all three...May the best man win attitude.

Cam in game Two-

-Only threw to backs and TE's

The out throw to Shockey was excellent because Cam did go thru his progressions on that play to find him.

He miss fired one at least three passes to WRs with the most glaring to me that throw into double coverage off his backfoot. The two that he skipped off the ground to the wrs were also poor footwork.

-Looked jittery in the pocket

When the Dolphins got pressure on him, Cam definitely was jittery. But he also had several passes in a clean pocket were he was dead on. Getting jittery because of pressure caused the poor footwork and inaccurate throws.

-Was decent with the starters, but didn't have to play with all backups

-Didn't try any deep balls

Credit there goes to the Dolphins defense. They did a good job covering downfield and getting pressure on him. There were a few plays were he was looking downfield and either had to run or take a sack.

Not MY comparison, the views held by the vast number of Cam supporters. If you would like my breakdown of pros and cons of the two, Jimmy is ahead by a good bit.

Agreed everything can be worked on, but don't assume Cam is the only one intent on or that will improve.

    • I have been looking for a dropped pass list and all that comes up is QBs. And team stats. When I do receivers I get the passing stats for a handful that threw passes this year.    I wanted to be accurate but anyhow I was looking because thought I remembered reading where T Mac had more drops than XL this year.  One of you many smarter than me people here,I would appreciate it if you know how to pull that up, please do. Thank you.    And yeah I know that isn’t all there is to it I just thought it was interesting.  Of course what the hell is a drop lol.
    • I agree with this and I think it's worth mentioning too that Bryce is not consistent on his placement and especially velocity and that in large part is driven by his footwork. We all know XL doesn't have the best hands and I don't know that he can overcome that. Cam always had the heater that just hit your hands and sank into your grip, where Bryce has some that are harder thrown, some soft. Bryce stepping into a pass looks so much different than that hop throw thing he does. I think XL really needs to hit the jugs machine and start learning how to catch all these different touch passes. TMac and Coker don't have these issues. If XL doesn't get some work in he's going to be out of the league in the next couple of years.
    • I think most people like XL from a personal standpoint. I don't think he's stupid either. Although if we are being realistic he is lacking in football IQ at this point in time and it cannot be disputed that he has not taken working on his craft seriously at all times given the body of work on the field. It speaks for itself. I myself have defended him at times given the circumstances of our QB room. But he is now in his third year and 25 years old. We are not in a position as a franchise to go around babying anyone especially first round draft picks. He needs to take his position and his football career seriously or he is going to end up selling used cars somewhere. I hope he realizes this and takes an extended break from social media because that mess certainly isn't going to increase his net worth if he ends up out of the league. And these hanger on types will disappear quick too once that money dries up and it surely will eventually. We'll see how he responds.
