The Colts are a warning to the Panthers

Yeah, and the Colts have had a few other players over the years too. But now look at them... I don't buy it they are tanking for Luck.

won't do them any good unless they get some talent on defense and replace that coach.

what's going to suck is the amount of money they threw at an old future HoF QB with a bum neck that is going to be keeping him from turning his head. that's got to suck. what kind of scrub GM does something like that?

That's funny coming from a Panthers fan. Or considering the only perfect team in NFL history is one such team. Not only can you get there, you can win it too. Don Shula would slap you silly.

Anything can happen in the NFL. Superbowl isn't just about a QB. Winning records year after year and making the playoff is though.

LOL....they swapped QB's mid-season and still stayed perfect. And then they swapped again in the playoffs and still won the Superbowl.

Newsflash: Football has changed a little since 1972.

This thread has a very valid point. As of now our close games are because of one player.

I don't think it was the personal however. I think good players are good players and what it is, is more of letting the QB run the game and make the calls 100% of the time.

The Colts let Manning have more control, and for good reason. But I believe that is the problem more so than building around a great QB.

But, ideally you want to build around a QB and on the other hand what are you supposed to do? Tell them they have no control of a team? It builds a closer team with healthy expectations. Building a leader as such has it's rewards and it's negative results and the first outweighs the latter. For example you say the Colts are in a bad situation because of Manning, but they do have a trophy from him do they not? Would you risk 15 years for a trophy and numerous other appearances? I would. It's more than the Panthers have as of now.

If Cam gives us a career like Manning's I'll take it for a pooty season when/if he leaves.

The good thing is there is only one Payton Manning, even Luck won't be the QB he has been.

IDK I laughed when they gave Caldwell the job, after watching him coach Wake all I could think was, it's good Indy has Peyton, now that seems to be hurtin a little.

Now give Cam a 100m contract...think we will be able to keep that caliber of players on the team?

i can promise you that he will at some point get a contract that big or bigger. hopefully it happens before he's in his mid 30s and has any neck surgeries. that's just dumb.

it's going to be hard to not want to give newton that kind of money, esp. when we want to keep him around, but hopefully this team will do well enough with him here and he'll be happy enough with the situation that he won't need $$$$$$$$$$ to get him to stay.

kind of wishful thinking there. what is really going to help will be finding players that are willing to take a little less to be a part of what is going on here and our being able to draft well and choose FAs well, finding hidden gems and such. picking up the high end FA probably won't happen, but teams like the packers, pats, and saints have done it without doing that. btw...i don't consider randy moss or wes welker to have been high end FAs when they went to the pats. welker was just another mediocre WR and randy moss was a has been lazy WR with a deserved bad reputation.

we'll just have to have a really smart FO and a good system on offense and defense in place that won't take stars to run effectively.

people will and did point out that he took them to the superbowl his first year as coach, but he did it with tony dungy's team and dungy's system. peyton even had caldwell bring back dungy's offensive coaching staff as consultants because he didn't like what caldwell's OC was trying to do.

interestingly, the lesson I got from the Colts is that no matter how great your starting QB is, don't neglect your backup completely.

I can see the other 'lessons' mentioned in the OP and in other posts, though.

and they have been doing that, I thought Sorgi would be a good replacement for Jake....

100% agreed here. you have to have a QB that is capable of doing most of the job of the starter. also, the system has to be friendly to them. i feel ok with DA being cam's backup, though he is far from ideal. the idea of clausen trying to run this system absolutely scares me.

the colts were spoiled in many ways by having peyton around. and irsay spends too much time drinking, but that's another discussion. not only has peyton probably been the most brilliant QB to ever play the position, he's also been an iron man. the last time he didn't start a game for the colts i think newton was 9 years old.

Sorgi was a great backup but Painter just isn't really there. I don't think that it's the lack of star power of the Colts that is holding Painter back. When Sorgi left, they didn't really replace him. They realized that, but then strangely when they knew Manning was going to miss a ton of time this year they waited forever to finally acquire a veteran... it was just a really weird situation, a total mishandle of it all it seemed.
