Schedule idea

I just read an article against changing to an 18 game schedule because of increased wear and tear on the player's bodies. It is a reasonable argument since over a 16 game schedule, there is already tons of injuries each season. I had one idea though, and I just came up with this idea literally 10 seconds before I started typing this so if there's a flaw in my thinking, don't bash me too badly. I was thinking we could go ahead and take away 2 preseason games and add 2 regular season games like planned, but also add another bye week somewhere in the schedule for each team. So the regular season would be 20 weeks long and each team could get a bye week during each 10 week half of the season. That could possibly help players to rest up and get some players back from injury and the season would really only end one week later than it currently does because it would start 2 weeks earlier with the shortening of the preseason.

I wonder who they plan on playing as the extra two games.

Or how to set that up.

Just two random games in conference?

Two bye weeks isn't a bad idea.

Also they could extend the roster by a couple of players, that would help. I heard them talking about a development league too.

Something would have to be done for sure though, I wouldn't be against extending the roster by 3 or so players and the practice squad by 2 or so.

as for lengthening the season, i don't think they should. 16 games is plenty, although i wouldn't mind knocking off a preseason game or two to start the season earlier

I agree that 2 preseason games is enough and I am happy with the current 16 game season but I am curious about the 18 game schedule because it means 2 more games of excitement for me each season. I won't be upset if we stay with 16 though because it works well.

I think it will happen though. 18 games. I said this in another thread. That I think they should boost the roster up to 60 players for the added injury factor, get rid of 2 preseason games and make them scrimmages instead. I also think they should add 2 more teams to the playoffs then we get a real wild card game, nothing more than rd.1 now.

Also with the extension of the roster, the actual game day roster should extend as well. Like if they did 60, 50 should be the game day active roster.

To me that would allow specialist in spots and not really hinder your depth or ability to do what you would usually do.

You could take specialist kickers like we do, and specialist return men etc, and still have what you would ideally want in other areas.

    • Smitty is a legendary footballer player but this has really damaged his reputation as a person. You don’t cheat on a woman who has been with you through everything and gave you children and especially not with another man’s wife. He doesn’t even have any remorse about it, acting like nothing happened.
    • That's a big ass center! Is there any center in the NFL that weighs 320 lbs? Also, we drafted a center last season. Not sure this guy is a center even if he took reps at the senior bowl. Looks like a guard to me unless his build is better suited to a lesser weight. In a zone scheme centers need to be able to move quickly.
    • The majority of NFL draft picks don't play all too many snaps lined up directly across from another NFL player, and I don't think many people really realize this. Unless you play a game against one of the 2-4 schools that are putting half their lineup into the NFL each season, most teams who have multiple draft picks, MIGHT only have 2-4 draft picks in any given season. Some skill positions get around 30 players drafted each year, other positions are in the teens to low 20's.  With at least a handful of them coming from non power conference schools too.  So the odds for any WR or CB to get too many games lined up directly against another future draft pick is pretty low. The better odds are that they get lined up against a future NFL player, i.e. a junior or senior WR getting lined up against a freshman or sophomore DB who will get drafted in a couple of years. Then if you take it one step further and look for players who actually play in the NFL and make a difference.   You're basically looking at players drafted in the first 3 rounds of the draft, so a little less than 100 players a year, spread out across all the positions and conferences (which in today's massive conferences, teams have even lower odds of player the teams with more NFL players than ever before).
