The Chud Affect

The owner of the Chargers announced today that Philip Rivers was having an "off year". I argue, could it be the loss of Chudzinski from their offense?

Chud, had spent the early part of his career with the Miami Hurricanes where he produced amazing TE's including Bubba Franks, Jeremy Shockey, Kellen Winslow Jr. and so on. During a three-year stint as offensive coordinator, the ‘Canes played in three Bowl Championship Series games and two National Championship games. They defeated Nebraska to win the national title in ’01, and in ’02, set school records for points, yards and rushing touchdowns before suffering their only loss of the season to Ohio State in the National Championship game. During his tenure as OC in Cleveland, in the 2007 season, the team saw a remarkable turnaround on the field. After opening the season with a 34–7 defeat by the Pittsburgh Steelers, the Browns traded starting quarterback Charlie Frye to the Seattle Seahawks, with backup Derek Anderson assuming the starting role. In his first start, Anderson led the Browns to a 51–45 win over the Cincinnati Bengals, tying the franchise record of five touchdown passes in a single game. The Browns finished the 2007 season a surprising 10–6, barely missing the playoffs due to tie-breaker rules. Nevertheless, the record was the team's best since 1994. Six players earned Pro Bowl recognition including QB Derek Anderson, WR Braylon Edwards and TE Kellen Winslow II (NFL.com)

When Chud moved to the San Diego to be TE coach & Assistant head coach, star pupil Antonio Gates racked up a career-high 1,157 yards, was named second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press and was invited to his sixth-straight Pro Bowl. During his first stint with the Chargers (2005-06), Gates had the only other 1,000-yard season of his career (1,101 yards in ’05) and he earned first-team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors both years. The Chargers offense seemed unstoppable, and finished his final year ranked #1! (Chargers player bio)

After having said all that, if you actually took the time to read it, success has followed Chud Since his college career. Our offense is vastly improved with him here.

Is Philip Rivers having an off year, or are the Chargers missing one of the most unappreciated coaches in the NFL???

    • What I love and hate about this team is it’s more filled with potential breakout players than ever before. JT, XL, Coker, Smith-Wade, Ikem, Trevin… and even Bryce are all guys I could legitimately see taking the next step. But the problem with having so many of those guys is that team success somewhat relies on them taking that step, and some are bound not to. That being said, I’m cautiously optimistic given our softer schedule, the way the offense clicked late last year, and the direction we finally have at GM, coach, and QB. Could see us as a sneaky playoff team.

    • Smith-Wade for me. He has the path to some decent hefty snaps in Evero’s scheme. He held his own last year and improved as he continued to get snaps— If he makes some strides, could be a very capable nickel.  I agree with Sanders. Bryce had some trust in him that final Falcons game post crazy head-stand.  Bryce looked for him a lot that final game and made some critical catches to get us the W. Seems he’s put in major work so I’m hopeful about him.  Wallace will have an offseason under his belt. I like him a lot, was higher graded than most remember in his draft (I.e Brugler had him LB3/70 overall) but he isn’t as cerebral of an LB as we’re used to. I think he could thrive if we get D captain/film-junky type next to him— because right now that’s Jewell.  Still a bit cautious but love the talent. Rozeboom may snag some playing time from him if he’s still working out the kinks.
