Re-watching Dragonball z

That's the same case with me too and I've never really understood why. As a kid I could watch Dragon Ball Z all day long but I hated every single one of the anime's that Cartoon Network showed. Is DBZ more Americanized or something?

it's the dubbing. characters' voices not matching up with their appearances etc. for DBZ, the voice acting was pretty well matched(to a very good extent other than toned down for child friendliness, better than the japanese counterpart because of how high pitched goku's voice was). The story and character development were pretty rpg-ish, as well.

compare that with some other animus where the dubbing was terrible(some characters having a valley girl or country accent, some characters just not playing the character role very well i.e Full Metal Panic! Sousuke's voice actor was beyond terrible and didn't capture the same intensity that the japanese voice actor achieved). These are the reasons many avid anime fans despise dubbing and download fansubs.

dragonball z was one of those early ones where the voice acting matched up. sure some parts were changed and sometimes even removed, but the dbz english dub is one of those rare hits.

add in the fact that beyond supernerds, maybe people didn't realize it was dubbed at all. Many people actually didn't know that the it's a japanese anime from the 80s that is now airing in the US almost 10-15 years later.

Not to mention.. It was a show with flashing lights, a cool story(bro), and dudes beating the poo out of each other. What kid wouldn't love that?

Sadly, some of the other animes cartoon network has aired have some of the dubbing problems or they're just cult animes. Or they're just bad to begin with but they air them because of the marketing potential with toys and poo.
