Why did Matt Moore go undrafted?

Recommended Posts

Thanks Urry!

That was a lot more detailed than the one I was able to find. Seems like his weight and that making him injury prone was a big factor. All of the negatives are issues that every young QB will have and even some vets so those wouldn't bother me that much. Actually those negatives seem similar to what I remember hearing about Matt Ryan.

The reason I asked this question was because I wanted to know what issues he had coming out of college and be able to compare them to how he is playing now. It would be neat to come back and reference this thread during the preseason when he will actually get some playing time.

The way I read it, it was more about his 'gunsliger' attitude that was a big knock. Not great pocket awareness and would just resort to chucking it once the pocket collapsed.

His pre draft downfalls seem awfully similar to Delhomme, especially when they linked him to being a rythm passer and that he can go stretches spraying the ball all over the place.

When I hear comments like this, I always think back to his first NFL completion when he threw a 45 yard perfect strike to Colbert, (which he actually caught) in tight coverage. When he went to the sidelines, Delhomme told him in the 100 times he has run that play he has never thrown that pass and Moores reply was "He was open". I kinda like that kid...

I was hugely impressed with him when he stepped up a few years ago and played quite well. I'd have handed him the reigns then and cut loose Delhomme, but then I hate Delhomme so it wouldn't have been a decision based on logic. I think he's got what he takes to be a starter, he just needs the opportunity.

he didn't play football the whole time in college and, in fact, left college and the game to play pro baseball in 2004. got drafted by the Angels.

went back to college at oregon state where he finished.

had he stayed playing the game he might have gotten drafted.

good question is why was tony romo not drafted and what did dallas see in both these guys?

Bill Parcells is one hell of a talent scout. Coaching IMO is his weak point but really he is not all bad at that ether.

To which Jake Delhomme said, "But Smitty only had both safeties and a CB on him, why would you throw to someone else?"

I kid, I kid...:D

Positives: Has a tall, lanky frame with room to carry at least another 20 pounds of bulk...Has long limbs, a bit high-cut, but shows tapered muscle definition in his lower frame and adequate muscles in his arms...Despite not playing baseball since high school, he was selected in the 22nd-round of the 2004 major league baseball draft......

Compares To: JOSH McCOWN-Detroit...Like McCown, Moore is a tall, lanky passer with decent mobility and arm strength. He settled down as a a senior, doing a better job of making progression reads, but will still try to force the ball when pressured...He's just not ready for prime time -- yet.

I wouldn't have expected him to go after the 20th round, tops. MLB draft, what a joke.

And I agree it's interesting that the guy they compared him to is 1 above him on the depth chart. So basically, if we see anyone in this draft with Josh McCown comparables, look out for Fox & Co. to pick him up.

Please Lord don't let someone find an article comparing Cutler or Campbell to McCown. :leaving:

Yeah, I can see those dropping his draft stock but I think that the injury issues were probably the reason he went undrafted from what I see. Like I said before, even 1st round grade QBs have some of those issues so for him to not even get drafted in the 7th for just those reason doesn't make sence to me.

As far as those weaknesses go, I have always thought that Delhomme could have been a much better QB if he had recieved the right coaching early on both in Carolina and New Orleans. Hopefully the new QB coach will be able to correct most of those issues with Moore if any still remain.

    • Would Morgan or Beason have been HOFers' if injuries hadn't derailed their careers?  I was not a close watcher of the game when Morgan was in his prime but I thought Beason had a few seasons at close to Lukes' level of play.
    • Franchise QBs feast when things are rolling and the tide that raises boats when things are going sideways.  Bryce isn't that. He's a complimentary player, that's it.  When the defense and STs are on point, he plays loose and it shows.  When we are in a dog fight and things haven't gone our way, he struggles.  It's that simple. He's not a horrible QB, but he's not top tier either.  So the question begs, is this worthy of a second contract?  The answer should be no.  It definitely is my answer. Bryce will never be a QB that can produce wins largely on his arm.  That's a FRANCHISE QB, any other QB is simply a placeholder at the starter's position until that guy can be found.   At some point the excuses of lack of weapons will be a straw man.  Heck, it's nearly there now.  I mean if he doesn't look even better than last year will we blame it on the TE position?  'Well if Bryce only had a player like Kelce, Kittle or Gronk on this team...'  Are we really going to do that?
    • When I arrived at college, I was 18, not too much younger than some of these draft picks.  It was not a huge school, but there were guys on the team who were 21, 22, 23....playing ahead of me.  I was seventh on the depth chart.  Those guys have been through a few seasons, were stronger, more knowledgeable.  I was a better raw player than some of them, but those other factors matter.  As I grew stronger, more familiar with the playbook, and learned what it was like to play in college, I gradually improved and with that, I rose up the depth chart.  It took most of my freshman year for the light to come on.  Had the coach thrown me into the starting lineup day 1, I would have probably failed.    And that was college.  So I agree with you based on my experience on a much lower level.  Frankly, I think that is why so many kids drafted to fill huge gaps bust.  The teams are desperate.  Anyone who looks to fill vacancies in the starting lineup through the draft is desperate.  You draft depth to develop.  For this reason, I say, "Let Walker start for a while."  Maybe Brazzell can be our WR 4.  Throw Hunter into a rotation and ask him to do one or two things.  Freeling needs some strength and he needs to work on run blocking.
