Truth Is: The Defense Is Horrible. Chud and Cam Are Regressing.

The defense doesn't even have to be discussed. 35 points is plenty enough points to beat a team on any given Sunday... Unless the team scoring 35 points has the Carolina Panthers' defense. They are obviously f*cking horrible and I'm tired of seeing people discussing which offensive players should be our first pick in the draft... They shouldn't be. The first pick should be a defender. Most likely, every pick after that should be defense as bad as we are.

Secondly, say what you want but Chud is regressing and consequently so is Cam. I'll go easy on Cam for a couple of reasons - First, he's being in a position to fail because of Chud's playcalling. Be honest, that 35 points today had very little to do with a dominant offense... We got lucky with 3 early turnovers and a KO return. Realistically, if our offense was that awesome, we should've had a lot more points than we had in the first half.

The other reason to go easy on Cam is because, duh, he's a rookie. But, he's shown at times that he doesn't play like a rookie. Today though, the stuff we saw was all rookie... He was overthrowing and forcing things that weren't there. The overthrows had a lot to do with poor snaps from Kalil; the forced throws I think are attributable to the Titans loss knocking his confidence a little bit and secondly, teams now know how to play our offense.

They have 10 weeks worth of tape on us now and the last two weeks have been our worst showings. Why? Because, now they know to create pressure with the front four and drop 7 into coverage. At times last week, the Titans were even dropping 8 into coverage.

This goes back to Chud. I understand we're a vertical passing team, but there is a little something called adjustments, and Chud isn't making them. Deangelo should've had over 100 yards rushing today. Instead, he broke a few nice gains and Chud was content with that and felt it was enough for the defense to respect and went right back to forcing the pass.

Problem is, again, defenses are now playing the pass. The passes Cam made today were into some very tight windows aside from the flats and screens. It's because teams are playing the pass now as the priority. Chud should mix up some heavy sets and power runs, but he doesn't. Even the runs we've broke for big gains have been out of cute little 1 back 1 TE sets.

Teams don't respect our run anymore and are happy to allow Cam to pass. The INTs are a result of nothing being there. Period. Even the Smitty TD was in an extremely tight window. Chud has to make adjustments or it's going to be a very ugly finish this last 6 games.

Just some observations... I'm at peace with this being a lost season now and just looking for improvements now and what we can do for next year as sad as it is.

I honestly don't think Cam is regressing. He was generally good-to-great until the last 5 minutes of the game where he stunk it up. That's how he's been in basically every game this season.

He continues to be the least of our worries though. Like Frank Caliendo said on the Fox pregame show, "Cam Newton is a winner stuck with a bunch of losers." Nail on the head.

28 pts on lions defense on road is not regressing

So do you count on 3 turnovers from 2 horrible throws and a forced fumble in the first 3 possessions from our opponent every game?

Cam is not regressing, he is learning

Yes, he is learning... But, he is also regressing from where he started. But again, I'm not really putting it on him... I think he's being put in bad positions in the passing game and I wish Chud would help him out.

1st INT -Gross got manhandled and caused it, pushed into Cam just as he was throwing

2nd INT - Hangartner got destroyed by Suh, Cam tried to throw to receiver and got nailed in split second

3rd INT - Great play by LB, pass was perfect otherwise

4th INT - junk time

Fairweather fans everywhere. The chat makes me want to cry on gameday.

How does saying our offense is regressing being a fairweather fan? LOL... A fairweather fan wouldn't give a sh*t and be off to pull for another team.

Believe me... I'm still here after plenty of sh*t seasons and depressing games since '95, I'm not going anywhere.

    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
    • There's a reason Greg Maddux was never a flamethrower but still one of the most feared pitchers of all time, because accuracy beats velocity far more often then vice versa. Once you exceed a certain minimum capability, you can thrive with extreme traits elsewhere, its not strictly about power in any sport but powerlifting.
