no first round pick for us

id love for peppers to stay and sign a long term deal with us. but IMO hes not worth a 100 million dollar contract. id rather take that money and go ahead and get some guys like beason and williams locked up for a few more years

Agree Pep is not worth a 100 Million dollar contract. Although we all know if asked for it, the Panthers would pony it up and make him the highest paid defensive player.

Not that I hate Peppers, I just love how we draft.

outside of what we have done in the 1st round....our drafting has been pretty medicore the past few seasons with any picks not in the 1st.

ummm...actually that was true up until 2007 when we got don gregory doing the college scouting. last couple years have been solid.

fortunately we are one of the few teams that gets their 1st rounders to stay and produce at a high level. about half of our starters are 1st rounders that we drafted. another 6 that started were drafted by the panthers in rounds later than the first and there were a few others that were later round picks that played a good amount as well.

2008

2nd: charles godfrey - starter right away.

3rd dan connor (not an impact yet but should still be impressive)

there was some good depth in the rest of the draft

2007

2nd: jarrett...has potential. we'll see this year if he can cut it

2nd: kalil...starter

3rd: charles johnson...should be a astarter next yyear but has been impressive with what he has seen

lots of potential in the rest of the draft...robinson, rosario, cj wilson (who may be the nickel.

2006

2nd: richard marshall...starting CB next year?

5th: jeff king

2005

meh...hangartner in the 5th

2004

3rd...wharton

I think to be fair you have to look at how many misses the Panthers have made also during that range. They have improved slightly (but then again, those guys are still here and get the "potential" angle. I do like the two seasons and I like they grab talent like Connor even if it isn't an immediate need.

I mean, it is unfair to but Godfrey in the same group as a Kalil. I mean after Colbert's first season some would have said he was going to be a good pickup. Godfrey has a lot of work to do if he wants to keep his job.

lot of misses prior to gregory. gregory turned things around, though. usually you could pretty much tell right away which of these guys were going to do squat. the last two years we have had a lot of really solid contributors.

that is what is more important for me to look at. what happened before gregory and what happened after he got here. imo, the difference is night and day.

i'm not all that worried about godfrey, though. he still does have to prove a lot but i have a good bit of faith in what he will be able to do.
