Why is Byron Mullins not starting?

He might be soft for his size, but he did have double digit boards last night and has shown improvement rebounding and defending on the block. An improvement though doesn't mean he is effective defensively..yet.

I could see him starting as soon as reggie williams returns. Williams will provide a scoring boost along with Kemba off the bench making Mullens' scoring need off the bench less startling. Mullens is the only one on the bench that can score consistently. That is the only reason I think he is not starting yet.

If you start Mullens and move DJ White to the bench it provides the second unit with a hustler, rebounder, and consistent inside contributor.

Eventually I see a starting line-up like this:

PG - DJ Augustin

SG - Gerald Henderson

SF - Corey Maggatte

PF - Boris Diaw OR Tyrus Thomas

C - Byron Mullens

6 - SG - Reggie Williams

7 - PF - DJ White OR Tyrus Thomas OR Boris Diaw

8 - PG - Kemba Walker

10 - SF - Derek Brown

11 - PF - Bismack Biyombo

12 - SG - Matt Carroll

*If Bismack Biyombo can continue to show improvement on the inside, he might replace Diop at C for reserve minutes. I am counting down the days until Diop pulls up lame with a in-grown toe nail, dislocated butt cheek, or stress fracture in left ear lobe.

Seriously though, if Mullens continues to improve he is the center of the future for the 'Cats.

If anything this season is a chance to see young guys, Kemba, Biz, Mullens, Henderson, hell the entire roster, continue to develop.

I also think that Paul is setting up this season to transition into his Son taking over as the head coach next year. IMO.

Sorry, went off on some non-mullens tangents. lol

    • His on target percentage is way down. 79% last year down to 64% this year.
    • I think we will surprise. We'll run all over them, and Dalton will be able to spread the ball around more effectively than Bryce. I just don't see a blowout like some are predicting. I heard the same thing about the Cowboys, but the Bills don't have anything close to Pickens. Not guaranteeing a win or anything, but it is possible. It will be closer than people think.
    • If you look at almost all Daniels stats, they are as good or better than last year minus perhaps Completion Percentage. I don't think Daniels himself is having very much less individual success than the Redskins are reverting to the mean.  https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/46003861/nfl-teams-likely-decline-lose-more-games-2025-season-predictions-vikings-chiefs-commanders-lions-colts#wsh Barnwell wrote about them in the preseason as a team that had an inordinate amount of luck or success in one score games that wasn't very likely to be repeated.
