"the next steve smith"

I hate it when people say this. And I hate when people talk about drafting X player in a middle round and think he's going to be Steve Smith reincarnate based on only 2 things

1. Similar height and weight

2. He was a return specialist in college

Here's the thing guys. Smith is like a one-in-a-million kind of player. There aren't really any other receivers in the league with his skill set. Steve's got a chip on his shoulder, which just exacerbates his abilities against other teams. So try to find another ~5'9'', ~185lb motivated receiver with a 43 inch vertical jump, route discipline, a lot of strength, sonic game speed (at least in his prime), and of course, the ability to scare the ever-loving poo out of defensive backs, instead of trying to find the next Ryne Robinson.

Smith's rare blend of skills allow him to really be one of the coveted receivers in the league that can both burn you over the top and "nickel and dime you to death". There aren't going to be a whole lot of receivers just like him to come on down in the future so when it comes time to get a new no.1 receiver just get one that's north of 6' and is a complete package.

Agreed and I'm guilty of it. As a fan, the thought of not having Smith on the field is scary, so I tend to look for anyone that slightly resembles him and ask....Can he fill Smith's cleats? Truth be known is just what you said, one in a million player and there will likley be no other that fits his play style to a "T"

if there ever is another steve smith, it won't be his height that is a factor.

it's talent combined with an unbridled desire to punch you in the mouth and the ability to get hit by a mack truck going 100mph and be able to jump back right back up, dance a jig and tell the mack truck "is that all you got? let's do it again."

you don't have to be 5'8 to be that guy.

just because you're 5'8 doesn't make you anymore likely to be that guy.

that guy just is.

You hit the nail on the head

Smity's mentality and on-the-field intensity makes him in his own league offensively compared to anyone really...from anytime.

If I could compare him to one guy, its Ray Lewis.

btw, Smitty happened to be a 6'1 250 lb LB...good gawwwddd

    • Throw in the fact that you have to overpay free agents to come here.  Everyone wants to win--or at least have a decent chance at winning. This followed the Bryce Young trade up draft.  That is the draft that crippled an already crippled franchise.   They moved up to #1 and paid the king's ransom only to admit that they weren't sure who they were going to draft--then they picked the wrong guy....amazing incompetence. Now let's take a look at the AT trade--we basically got some future mid round draft capital.  Minnesota has a QB on their roster who reads quickly, is accurate, and is only 24.  (Brosmer).  Minnesota is keeping him on the roster because on the PS, they would lose him.  Is he the answer if we traded AT for him?  Maybe not, but there is potential--as much potential as you will find on day 3 of the draft.  He would be, at worst, the best backup QB on the roster.  Now, did we give Dalton a ton because he has a good relationship with Young?  What if Young does not work out?   Then you have 2 mistakes and no QB. I dunno--I believe in competition, and I believe there should always be efforts to improve the roster--are we trying to make ourselves not look inept?  With Baker and Darnold leaving Charlotte for successful turnarounds, are we capable of having a good QB?   Cam was natural ability and he had the Alpha gene, and we drove him into the ground.
    • When he looks like trash this week against the Cardinals what's going to be the excuse?
    • Facts!!! God damn I wish Cam had this many excuses made for him, he’d be in the hall of fame
