Pass Rushers - 2nd Round DE

Lout

Recommended Posts

There are several ways we could go with that 2nd Round pick.. whether it be, CB, Safety, Oline, OLB, etc. I think we can add DE to that list. After watching the Giants dismantle the Packers, I feel compelled to improve our pass rush in the worst way. The Saints are very similar to the Packers, and improving the Dline is the key to defeating Drew Brees.

Taking a mammoth DT like Brockers in the 1st is great, and is a major step toward that goal.. but our DE rotation leaves a lot to be desired. We have nobody over a 3rd round pick starting for our Dline. It's time we addressed this.

There are several DE's 2nd round that would vastly improve our pass rush.

Defensive End

Chandler Jones - Syracuse - 6'5" 265lbs

Pro Comparison: Justin Tuck

  • Longest Arms in the Draft, regardless of position
  • UFC Champion, Jon Jones' brother
  • Great athletiscm
  • Very strong and can shed blockers with ease in run game
  • Consistently gets in the backfield
  • Frequently gets too upright with poor pad level
  • Good First Step
  • Poor change of direction
  • Even with poor hand placement, he still manages to hold his own in the run game
  • Nice club move, but lacks pass rush moves, lacks proper technique and pad level, with coaching could become elite

Vinny Curry - Marshall - 6'4" 263lbs

Pro Comparison: Demarcus Ware

  • Shows great technique stipping the ball
  • Explosive tackler
  • Great agility getting around the OT/ Uncanny Change of Direction
  • Quickest DE in the draft
  • Very Quick Hands and Nonstop Motor/Effort
  • 3 Years of High Productivity
  • Limited Pass Rush Moves/ Relies too much on suddeness
  • Raw against the Run.. may be a situational pass rusher until he refines run Defense
  • Gained 20lbs of muiscle in past year and did not lose speed
  • Very high upside/ceiling
  • Did not play high level competition

Cam Johnson - Virginia - 6'4" 270lbs

Pro Comparison: Jeremy Mincey

  • Long Arms with great hand placement
  • Great motor that never stops
  • Very strong and holds the PoA
  • Has mental lapses and loses containment often
  • Full repotoire of pass rush moves, Swim/Bull/Club/Rip
  • Very strong hands that help gain leverage
  • High Character/High Durability, only missed 1 game in college
  • Average quickness around edge

Andre Branch - Clemson - 6'4" 260lbs

Pro Comparison: Derrick Harvey

  • Long arms, able to stack and shed blocks well
  • Average burst on edge
  • Good awareness, does not lose contain on the backside
  • Shows violent hands with decent pad level
  • Not an agressive pass rusher
  • Limited pass rush moves
  • Great motor with relentless pursuit
  • Has the frame to add 10+ lbs
  • Get's blown off the ball in short yard situations due to poor First Step
  • High potential due to athletiscm

Now do we want a traditional DE or should we go with a hybrid OLB/DE like player.

That's a good question. I pondered this.. and only found 1 OLB in that mold in the 2nd round. Ronnell Lewis. I could see us taking a Courtney Upshaw in the 1st round though..

Ingram from SC could fall.

Andre from Clemson should be there too.

Ingram can play 3-4 LB, so I think there is less of a chance that he falls.

Andre will def be there.. I will add him.

I think the guy from Illinois could fall, Whitney Mercilus.

I really like Vinny Curry.

Vs West virginia

The guy just makes plays, he is always in the backfield.

I can't believe he doesn't have a 1st round grade.. the guy is insanely athletic.. and production to boot. Being in a small conference is hurting him I suppose.. but didn't hurt Demarcus Ware. I bet his stock raises after the senior bowl and combine. If he lasts to the 2nd round, we would be foolish not to take him.

this is my thinking.

i'd like a joker/pass rush specialist.

Vinny Curry is projected to have the athletiscm to play either position, but projected better at DE.

The only player I would want more than Vinny Curry in the 2nd round is Chase Minnifield, because he is the best zone corner in this draft.

i think we'll be using it enough.

whatever insurance we got for TD should be able to fit into that role.

I follow that line of thinking. I just want the LBer to be more LB than DE.

Much like TD was in his prime really. He could blitz with the best of them with his speed, but his forte was being a LBer.

Zach Brown reminds me a bit of TD.. and I hear he is falling down boards. Could be a 2nd rounder. Lavonte David is the best coverage LB'r in this draft, but I don't know if he has any pass rush skills...

I like Ronnell Lewis from OU.. he used to play LB but switched to DE his last 2 seasons.. so he has coverage skills for a pass rush specialist.

    • I think he did a solid job.  Honestly I liked his post game interview the best.  He gave himself a C and said he left a lot out on the field.  That kind of attitude can carry him far.
    • This is lacking a fairly considerable amount of context. For one, Adams(age 22) started 12 of 16 games, had 38 rec, 446 yds and 3 TD's on 66 targets(18 less, with 2 less games started). The main thing missing here is that the top two WR's for Green Bay that year combined for about 2800 yds and 25 TD's. Now if you want to throw a more accurate dart at Adams, take a look at year two. This year the production was spread around considerably and Adams didn't stand out from that pack(pun not intended).  So, if XL struggles mightily this season, I would probably keep that comparison in your quiver to counter argue. I would suggest that I don't think that scenario is probably very accurate for most HOF caliber WR's taken in the first round over the past 15 or so years. Adams was the 89th pick overall, as well. A little different hill to climb than XL, although not massively.
    • to clarify I am not referring to Will Levis.  Not knowingly.   I just made that up and tried to use a reasonable guesstimate of what else was done.  That sounded in the ballpark.  At one time I did look it all up and there were several teams that had much more successful days downfield.   If that happened to be Levis' actual numbers than it's more of a lucky coincidence.  If memory serves, it wasn't just Will Levis that brought the claim into question, it was SEVERAL teams had better days.  and you are missing my entire point of the subjective nature of it all.  If PFF employee Doug watched Bryce's film and then used his same unique subjective vantage point to grade all 31 other starting QBs.  Then dumped into into a spread sheet, it would a subjective Doug take but at least it would be a level uniform subjectivity.   The grades are done by various people.  All watching and applying their own subjective view to a play.  Everyone isn't going to grade incompletions out the same.  Or completions.   So when you dump it all into a spread sheet and hit sort.....it's not actually a statement of fact as portrayed.  Which is why you sometimes get some head scratching stuff.  I'm not reframing anything.   I don't think.  I just wasn't going to look it all back up so I was talking vaguely off the general issue I have with PFF and treating any random claim they make as the truth.
