Kiper: Nothing 'pressing' for Panthers

"They don't have any real pressing areas," said Kiper on a national conference call with reporters, acknowledging that's the case only if franchise defensive end Julius Peppers is still with the team next season.

But Kiper also said not having a first-round choice -- which they traded in 2008 to Philadelphia, using the Eagles pick draft offensive tackle Jeff Otah -- also has limited Carolina's offseason options.

"I really thought they might try to move forward with a young quarterback," said Kiper. "But they have no ammunition; (dealing for) Otah prevented that. I thought they'd maybe make a splash for Jay Cutler. Jake (Delhomme) struggled at the end of the year. It seems like they would be looking for an heir apparent for him, but they never do."

I think former Colts general manager Bill Toban said it best:

... and who in the hell is Mel Kiper, anyway? I mean, here's a guy who criticizes everybody, whoever they take. He's got the answers to who you should take, to who you shouldn't take. He tells us about your team. He tells us about the Rams. Mel Kiper is a tortoise. He tells us about Tampa and everything else. In my knowledge of him, he's never even put on a jockstrap, he's never been a player, he's never been a coach, he's never been a scout, he's never been an administrator, and all of a sudden, he's an expert. He's in our paper two days ago, telling us who we have to take. We don't have to take anybody that Mel Kiper says we have to take. Mel Kiper has no more credentials to do what he's doing than my neighbor, and my neighbor's a postman and he doesn't even have season tickets to the NFL."

Umm.. really? :out:

Is he always this bad?

Yes, he's always that bad. That's why the only draft guy I listen to that's on TV is Mayock.

I looked it up... Kiper never participated in football even in high school.

Honestly, I don't understand why ESPN has stuck with this guy for so long. He has all the resources of the mighty ESPN behind him, but he still barely has a better track record for recognizing NFL talent than the average Joe on a message board.

    • In 2025 Sam Darnold had over 1k more passing yards than Bryce Young on 1 less pass attempt. Repeat that to yourself several times and let it sink in. I absolutely love it when people come on here and invoke Sam Darnold like some gotcha. Darnold is the physical prototype for what anyone needs in a franchise QB. All the physical tools. Few people thought he would put it all together on the mental side of the position. He used to make some of the worst decisions you would ever see. At times in the past he made up for that with absurd throws and athleticism. But make no mistake whatsoever no matter how you feel about our starting QB. Bryce Young is a completely opposite conundrum. He lacks virtually any and all physical tools and athleticism and his elite processing is really mediocre at best on a good day and horrific on a bad day. These are realities people should have already been addressing instead of quadrupling down in year four.
    • The nice thing about the timing of Bryce's contract at least is that it's going to match up with the 2027 Draft Class. No excuses, he either becomes Rams 2nd half Bryce year long, or we draft his replacement.  Nothing wrong with carrying Bryce on his 5th year expiring and a 1st round rookie waiting in the wings. Let the rookie sit until the trade deadline, deal Bryce to a needy team at the time, profit.
    • Yeah they were bad QBs - but QB's that stayed on their teams for several years.  BY is better than all of those.
