his speed isn't the issue for me. he's a zone CB. in this system he'd be a better FS, which is a need but i don't necessarily want to give up a 1st for it.

jenkins is just flat better.

Man Coverage: Possesses prototypical size and strength combination to lock down NFL receivers on the outside. Long arms and attitude give him a chance to be very good in press role. Plays with natural bend and fair foot quickness in his backpedal. Hips are fluid for his size, opens them up quickly out of pedal to keep inside position while running down the sideline. Recovery speed from double-moves and pick plays is more than adequate, does not give much ground trailing on crossing routes. Can be overaggressive landing his punch in press, giving up inside position, losing his balance, or even falling down.

Zone Coverage: Mainly used in man, but flashes playmaking ability in zones, as well. Uses his size and length to close and wrap effectively after the catch. Reads quarterback when playing off, baits him to make the underneath throw then closes to make the interception or a big hit to dislodge ball from receiver. Uses length to knock away touch passes behind him and in front of the safety.

40 speed doesn't mean much because he's not covering anyone or having to react. His tools translate to a zone type of player. I like his physicality but still think his coverage is a question mark.

Yeah no don't think I'm crowning him cause he ran a faster forty than Mo and Jenkins. I just have heard a lot of users on here try and tell me that the reason he fits better in the zone is because of his speed. I think he is SCARY similar to Gamble. I'd love him to come to Carolina and hold down the fort with Gamble as he learns how to grow into a solid corner as Chris did.

He's got potential, that's for sure. I just think he closes on the ball well but doesn't necessarily cover man to man well. That's why I consider him a fit for zone. It isn't a bad thing, but the number 1 thing I want from a CB is coverage skills.

That's something I'm willing to bring him in to work on, and in a worse case scenario, he moves to FS and we send Martin packing, then we either find ourselves a solid #2 corner in free agency, or with a high draft pick next season.

Gamble at #1 corner

Godfrey at Strong

Dre at Free

And like I said, FA or next year pick at #2 corner

I would definitely take that secondary as a consolation prize if he didn't pan out at corner.

So you want us use a 9 overall pick on a player you aren't sure is good enough to start at his own position.

Hahaha

In all seriousness though, I AM sold on Dre. I've been wanting us to pick him up for a while now and I think he is well worth the 9th pick, barring a Mo Claiborne slip. Our secondary is dog poo. Godfrey and Gamble are holding down one side while Captain and Sherrod continue to give up big plays.

The best part about Dre though is that if he didn't pan out at corner for some reason, He could easily upgrade Martin at safety. How many players in the top ten could play a different position and excel at it?

Dre's man coverage skills are great. He constantly shut down team's top receiver while Barron helped in run support. Even if people think he has to move to free safety, after we make a few cuts and restructure a few contracts, we will have the money to sign someone like Tracy Porter in free agency

Oh isn't great to hear some insight from an actual fan of the tide.

Hopefully this will stop all the "he can't play man" talk.

Our Secondary sucks in part because they are being asked to cover for 5+ seconds. Adding one risky piece isn't going to make Drew Brees less accurate.

The NFL doesn't work this way any more. QBs are too good and passing attacks are too complex and efficient at what they do. The only way to disrupt that efficiency by forcing the QB off of his rhythm. The days of the shut down CB are coming to an end.

    • Tools. If I hear that term used one more time I'm going to lose my damn mind.  "Tools" are meaningless if they cannot use them already. Stop looking for "tools" and find productive football players. Stop looking for combine freaks and look for guys that have produced at a high level already. Tools my ass.
