they were running the same scheme in 07, around the same time they were starting guys like kawika mitchell at linebacker, while they had like at least 3 starting caliber DEs and two solid starting DTs

LB - Pierce was a pro bowler the year before

LB- Kiwanuka- 1st rounder

they had talent playing LB

it's not nearly as foolish as constantly arguing for drafting a linebacker as if his acquisition will be a panacea for the defense's problems

He wouldn't be a cure-all for the defense, but it is a known fact that most linebackers have success much earlier than most defensive tackles. I could grab some statistics, but I'm lazy and you should know that it's true.

oh btw you just named 3 teams that have about 2 linebackers they drafted in the first round in the last 10 years so lol

By the way, when you have one of the greatest LBs to ever play the game.....you dont need to replace him.

It is about talent. Not how often you draft players. All those top Ds depend on LB talent.....go back and look at there 1st and 2nd round picks. They have drafted LBs at the top of drafts.

he made it as an alternate

also Kiwanuka was IRed in the middle of the season. based on your argument, they shouldn't have made it with such a loss of talent

lol why bring up the 2nd round when you guys don't even want to wait that long to draft linebacker

and because most people judge a linebacker's success mostly based on how many tackles they can make, i would say that perception is fallacious and inconsistent

Did you watch our defense last year? Tackling players is an immediate upgrade.

You're short-siding Kuechly's ability, but he's not a pro yet, so I understand.

yes i watched over half of those missed tackles coming from the defensive backs and the remainder being committed by guys we would never start unless we'd been severely depleted like we had been last year, which isn't a common occurrence

So did Cam, Beason, and tons of other players. Doesn't matter.

Kiwanuka played in 7 of there 10 regular season wins......so yeah, he counts.

I have no issue drafting one in the 2nd round and not the first. Only an issue with drafting a DT at 9

he's also a terrible fit at linebacker overall and had been quoted this year as saying “I do suck. I am a very honest person.”

Thank You! This is the argument Kuechly detractors. DT would be a reach at 9 based on who is going to be available. It's not linebacker vs. DT based on need, it's players available at 9 that would justify the value.

    • I originally hated the Miller deal but with the cap projected to rise nearly $10M next season the Canes struck some pretty good deals between Miller and Ehlers. Most of the team is locked in for the next few years. Nikishin will need an extension probably in the $6M AAV range. And Blake will need one if we don’t move him. Personally I’d move Blake, picks, and any prospect not named Nikishin/Nadeau/Artamonov for McTavish as I don’t see any any of the big time players moving teams next year. Realistically the Hurricanes should just target Gustavsson next year to fix the goal tending issue. But I’m all for moving Blake, picks, and prospects for McTavish this year. Ehlers - Aho - Jarvis Svechnikov - McTavish - Stankoven Martinook - Staal - Carrier Hall - Kotkaniemi - Robinson Jost - Jankowski Slavin - Miller Nikishin - Chatfield Gostisbehere - Walker Reilly Andersen Kochetkov I’d do Blake, Felix-Unger-Sorum, and 27 2nd for McTavish.
    • Very true on the length but stuff like this is never where we shine. We aren’t a good team at drafting.
    • Homerism aside, the more I see from Dan, the more impressed I am.  His player evaluation instincts. Last year his 2 premier FA signings, Hunt and Lewis COMPLETELY changed the line and I have a feeling his success in choosing blue chip guys will continue.  Look at the panthers’s rep for FA signings in the past. By and large, it’s been guys 1 year past their prime who had an injury and suckered our GM in to a crippling contract. We never get nice things. When was the last time this team signed 2 young blue chip studs  in the same offseason to contracts worthy of their impact? Ever?  Im telling y’all, players respect and trust Morgan.
