weight loss

I'd recommend stop psyching yourself out by saying you are 42 like its a bad thing. 42 is young in this day and age and isn't preventing you from doing jack squat. Its almost like that number has given you license to fail.

I'd also recommend picking up some weights. The more muscle mass you have the more calories you will burn all day long.

The only way I'm wrong is if he's only interested in having a lower weight. I'm under the assumption that he wants to lose excess fat. You don't lose fat by starving yourself. When you do that, your body retains a higher portion of what you eat for fat preserves and uses less nutrients that make your body function properly. Our body is designed (or evolved, for some of you) for survival - we can go a long time without eating. Storing fat is a big priority for human bodies.

I know you like scientific literature and peer reviewed articles. Show me just one that agrees a low calorie diet not only burns fat, but is healthy. I've seen plenty that warn about the loss of muscle mass and bone density... while the body stores more fat.

His entire post talked about how he needed to drop weight. Burning more calories than you take in absolutely will cause weight loss. Nothing you said makes that statement false.

Yes I'm sure the doctor mentioned in the OP would encourage unhealthy weight loss at the expense of bigjohn's muskuloskeletal system. Profit driven industry.

Remember this BigJohn -

most of the folks giving advice out willy nilly on this thread are probably bigger lard asses than you.

If their post counts have a positive correlation to their ass size, I am certain of it!

What I find interesting is people's tendency to project their own self image onto others.

what I find interesting is that the CDC says about 2/3 of Americans are overweight to overweight/obese - yet everyone on the internet is toned, fit, a hot body, and one of the beautiful people.

... which brings me back to my original point. Not all weight loss is good weight loss.

The CDC only considers height and weight. To the CDC, these two individuals are considered equally obese:

Very few people looked like Awnold prior to Algore inventing the internet - now the worlds full of them.

I guess you won't mind quoting whoever said they have a superb physique in this thread?

I know I didn't. I also know that this isn't the first thread you've randomly popped in and tried to hurl insults at people contributing to the topic.

Randomness is the nature of internet chat rooms dude. Some guy from bulgaria could pop in and take a dump on your hat and there isnt a damn thing you could do about it. Best not to get too worked up over it.

But I wasnt attempting to insult anyone in particular - just saying - everyone is an expert and a beautiful person on the net.

googoodan has a very valid point... BMI, while fair for some people, doesn't give a complete picture. At 6'0", 215lbs I'm listed as 29.2, high in the "overweight" category, and nearly in the obese category. Yet I workout 6 days a week, have less than 15% body fat and 17.5 inch arms... hardly overweight.

Most NFL players would be listed as overweight or obese... so for healthy, athletic people, BMI is pretty useless.
