Great Article on JR and Cam

His friend started the first restaurant but he invested his NFL Championship bonus check into the business and became a partner. Richardson stayed with the company (initially Spartan Foods), through various sales and renames, long after his original partner had retired.

You're obviously more in the know about these kinds of things... And sure I could google it, but why waste your vast knowledge? In saying all that...

What was his connection with BoJangles then?

I remember hearing the rumors at the time, but this is the first time I've seen any specifics. Wonder what picks were offered?

How much different would our team history look had this gone down?

The Indianapolis Colts drafted Manning in 1998. The Panthers proposed a trade for the pick. Richardson remembers offering Collins, wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad and a package of draft choices.

Imagine Smitty playing with Peyton for the mjority of his career. That would have been a site to see.

This article, portraying Richardson's unmistakable slobbery man-love for Johnny U, along with that pic in the Observer with Jerry's hand resting on Cam's knee in his executive Golf Cart - puts JR in an entirely new light to me.

Yeah respect for great players is stupid. You are an idiot and should kill yourself.

I didn't know about this either - no idea why the press isn't more forthcoming on things like this.

But, to go from 13, to 1, even with Collins (who had thrown 27 INT to 11 TD the year prior) and Muhammad (who hadn't become a force yet), it would've cost their 1999 #1 (which went to Washington) and the current year's #2 (which went to Miami so Carolina would have a first rounder in 2000). It would've been a tough trade to pull off, and given that JR and Polian didn't have a great history at that point, I don't know that Bill did anything more than toy with JR.

This article also makes me wonder whether the Matt Ryan rumors in 08 were true, and if that was JR, too.

Interesting that's where your mind goes, but that's between you and the psych ward. FWIW, I don't imagine anyone from JR's era doesn't revere Unitas on that level, even without a personal connection that JR had.

    • I think the qualification has changed over time though. A deep ball play used to take 4 to 6 seconds for the receiver to get to that spot on the field. Now a receiver can be there in 2.5. That's less time than most QBs have to set and throw. In my mind a deep route takes time to develop. A crossing route and a deep route can't take the same amount of time at full speed. You can have 4 deep balls on the same drive,  almost 5 if you do 5 20 yard throws goal line to goal line. That doesn't even make sense when you say it out loud.
    • The sad part is it looks manicured enough that he's aware it's running away from him.  Also, I just wanted to give you some fun loving grief on King Haynes today having a chance to throw a game winning TD, and was wildly errant, and ultimately picked off to end the game.  So happy I won't have to hear anything else about The Golden Calf of Bristol lite ever again watching college football.
    • I just think Panthers believe in Bryce far more than the fans do and he is most likely going to be the QB at least the next two seasons. the real shot of us moving from Bryce is not getting an extension, till then they are going to give him every chance to succeed and I just want to win.
