If you want to be a part of his interest, you could consider some gold panning equipment.

The Charlotte area has a lot of places to pan for gold.

They used to find nuggets in Irwin creek, which was adjacent to the largest gold mine in the Carolina's (in what is now 3rd ward).

The Uwharries and Cabarrus county have good gold panning areas as well.

You'll likely find nothing but flakes, but that would probably be very exciting for a young kid.
