Busy day for Bears

Likewise, John Elway's.

You'd have to admit though that there are more examples of guys like Ryan Leaf and Jeff George than there are Manning and Elway.

Could Cutler grow up? Sure, but the burden of proof right now is on him. Until he shows me otherwise - and he could - I have my doubts.

Does that seem unreasonable?

Of course it's not unreasonable!! That doesn't mean I won't still argue/debate it with you ;)

Same reason as Dungy (i.e. questions about his maturity and attitude)

If he fixes them, he could be fine. If not, issues could be on the horizon.

Not that complicated, really.

actually it is pretty complicated, not as generalized as you would like to believe.

there are noted differences of which you fail to recognize. For instance Cutler never flipped off his home fans and he liked Shanahan a whole lot. Not to mention the fact that Cutler was never benched in a game for poor play like George was.

do you remember the Jeff George story? It's a lot different from this one.

Cutler may have a bit of an abrasive personality but he is no where near the immaturity level of Jeff George.

thefuzz why do you think Cutler's production and the perception that the highly productive QB can't lead a team is more reasonable than the fact that the Broncos have been one of the worst teams in scoring defense the last two years when trying to explain why the Broncos can't get to the playoffs?

I saw the intangibles question/jab. My definition obviously is different than yours.

RB, I do not like the way that he carries himself on the sidelines, do not like the way he leads, do not like his fire, do not like that he has not had a winning record, etc...

Did you want him here?

I'm curious how many Denver games people actually watched.

The passing game was the only thing keeping the Broncos in games last year. Every RB they had went down (although they still found ways to produce runners with Shanahan) and their defense was ridiculously bad. That said, Cutler does not have nearly the talented group of receivers in Chicago as he had in Denver. But it all may just even itself out with a better running game and better defense. Time will tell.

Jake Plummer took the same team to a 13-3 season the year before. Let's also not forget that the Broncos were a team looking to head to the playoffs in 06 as well before Cutler came in for Plummer. Then last year when the team is in sure shape to just run away with the division, they lose the last 3 games of the season and 2 of which were very winnable games. In fact they are the only team in NFL history to have a 3 game lead on the division title heading into week 15 and lose it. When you only throw 2 TD passes while giving away 4 picks and your team needs you to play well, it's not a good sign.

I just don't think he has the leadership or the discretion to win when it counts. He is far too confident in his own abilities and that leads him to make a lot of mistakes. I watched the last 5 games of the season (thank you Game Rewind) and he just did not make good decisions when the game was on the line.

As far as the defense goes, some of that is attributed to the offense being so inconsistent for the Broncos last year. Yeah it was high powered but only for a few drives, they had a bad habit of sputtering quickly which gave the opposing team good field position against a defense that is shaky to start with.

I really hate it for the Bears because I have a ton of respect for the team itself, and I hate it for their fans. I know Bears fans have been waiting for anything resembling a QB for a while now, and I just don't think that Cutler was the answer, especially for the price they paid for him. I know the Bears haven't had a terribly large margin of success in the draft lately but that's not a good reason to give away so much of it.

Very good write up, but they were up 4 games in the division...pretty wild to throw that away.

2008 denver broncos defense------449 points allowed.

Peyton Manning couldn't even lead the Colts to the playoffs in 01 when his defense gave up 400+ plus points. (486 to be exact)

Cutler has had to deal with a horrible scoring defense both years he has been the guy in Denver.

Maybe you didn't consider the fact that in close games Cutler actually has a winning record?

Oh and as for the last question, I'm not going to get into a "new QB in Carolina" pissing contest at this time. Lets try to keep it away from that.

Don't fee bad for us just yet. We are a MUCH more balanced team than Denver has been in a while

Your defense is much better but conversely your receiver talent and offensive line aren't as good as what Denver has. I think he has a better shot in Chicago but to pin the hopes of the franchise on him may have adverse effects.

    • Sorry man you lost me at "Teppers have evolved as owners". Limped into playoffs at 8-9 not even above .500 Tepper is trash as an owner bro and that's not even a discussion at this point. 37-83 w/l ratio. Nuff said.... Morgan tho, he's cooking and it ain't cuz of Teppers leadership
    • After listening to Morgan's presser twice, I came away with some key beliefs. First of all, I don't think he's a bullshitter. What you see is what you get. When he says something, he means it.  The Teppers really have evolved as owners. Morgan has mentioned how they're easy to work with--a pleasure to work with a few times now. There seems to be a good relationship between all of them (and include Dave Canales on that). We'll see if it lasts. Yes, no one wanted to come to Carolina with the previous management, but that seems to have changed. The team signed arguably the top Edge, LB and OT on the market, two of them on pretty good deals and one on what I'll say is "not a bad one." And, credit Sunshine Dave "Flowers and Cotton Candy" Canales for helping to change the culture. Morgan mentioned getting guys--and I'm paraphrasing--that are not only great football players but great people. Don't look for us to be acquiring any James Pearce types anytime soon, just saying. We'll see if that holds true in the future. Dan Morgan really has set up the Panthers to take the BPA/BAP. He mentioned it at least a couple of times, and he doesn't seem pressured to pinpoint a particular position. He just wants quality players that will help the team. This is how it's going to be (to your joy or dismay, probably for as long as he's here), and personally I love it. Many of us know how Morgan was when he played: aggressive! That's what he's going to be when making acquisitions. He explicitly said it, and emphasized it. All avenues are open (think FA, waivers...the draft)! Personally, as long as it's controlled aggression and not reckless aggression, I love it.  On KP: "Mobility is big in this league."  He basically says if another QB is the BPA while drafting--we're going by our board, people--we're going to add them.        ...
    • Canes are so fascinating. Despite inconsistent defense and poor goalie play they keep winning.
