The first gameplay footage of ODST was released at E3 which can be found here http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F11oxjKC_6c&feature=channel_page

They also announced it will include access to the beta of the new prequel to Halo, which will be Halo Reach. That trailor can be seen at the end of the E3 video.

ODST plays off the Halo 3 engine, so it's basically an expansion, but w/ a new character. It will include 3 new multiplayer maps for Halo 3, access to the Halo Reach beta, and a new co-op fire fight game option.

Halo 3 ODST is a prequel to Halo 3 basically, but you never play as Master Chief. Halo Reach will be a prequel to Halo 1. Reach is the first human populated planet that the Covenant find, which is where most of the Spartans die.

The story is basically told in the book of Fall of Reach, pretty good read for any Halo nerds like me.
