Need help with television question

I have a LED flat screen - my folks want to get a flat screen tv - they are still using a tube set - I know not to get them a plasma tv due to light conditions in the room, but what is the difference between a LED and and LCD television?

The difference is the light engine. LCDs use a bulb, fluorescent I believe, while LEDs use a panel of LEDs. Both have Liquid Crystal Displays, just just different light sources. LEDs run hotter too, but use less energy...

Both are good but wont have as good a picture quality as the Plasma you mentioned.

LEDs seem to be the future and Organic LEDS while too expensive at this point will probably rule the market.

Just figure out the size TV you want, do a little reading over at AVS Forums and go for it.

LEDs use less energy and weigh a lot less than LCDS...both are good though.

Yep, how it's lit is what makes the difference. There are different styles of LED lighting too. Some are only lit on the edges, some in the center, some are completely backlit (these tend to be the best quality)

Back lit LEDs have the advantage of being able to completely turn off the individual pixels, which results in better black levels, and more color depth. Edge lit LEDs have the advantage of being much much thinner.

The picture difference between LED and LCD is not really that significant to the standard TV viewer. If they are going from tube to either one, they will be equally impressed.
