Charlotte Council approves plan to give Panthers $125 million

The Panthers have not soiled their hands by shaking down the city of Charlotte for money to upgrade their stadium.

But they are certainly willing to catch whatever might be generously thrown at them, and the Charlotte City Council voted 7-2 last night to endorse a proposal to give the team $125 million.

The vote came during a closed session, and neither city officials nor anyone from the team commented on the proceedings, according to Steve Harrison of the Charlotte Observer.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson and team president Danny Morrison made a presentation to the Council at last night’s meeting, at which police guarded the door.

Both Richardson and Morrison (the two quiet guys pictured here, next to coach Ron Rivera) left today’s press conference to introduce new general manager Dave Gettleman without taking questions, with a team spokesman referring all inquiries back to the city.

The plan would call for a tax on prepared food and beverages to be increased from 1 percent to 2 percent, and would have to be approved by North Carolina’s General Assembly and governor Pat McCrory (a former Charlotte mayor).

The Panthers are clearly sensitive toward the perception of taking a public handout, even though Richardson privately financed Bank of America largely through the sale of PSLs. But city officials are also sensitive toward anything resembling not appeasing the local NFL team, apparently scared by the specter of Los Angeles rumors.

Ace Boogie approves, even if Panthro does not.

I'm excited for two reasons:

One being the obvious

The second is it will keep the poor hillbillies/ghetto folk from Rock Hill or Concord from polluting the Charlotte night life. They can't afford the .03 extra their drinks will cost.

Today is a great day for Chatlotte.

Cheers, Mr.Richardson.

    • Are you arguing that his height deficiencies and footwork within the pocket have not been a present issue clearly seen on his game tape particularly in the games he struggled in? Because that's simply denying what everyone in this fanbase who have watched the games have seen. It's interesting how hardline BY fans here quickly and effortlessly pivot from whailing about being victimized to becoming the aggressor and hurling out allegations of bias and hatred. And at the end of the day while Bryce Young clearly improved significantly from the first two games of the season the reality of the situation is he still finished 42nd in yards per pass attempt behind Mac Jones and tied with Caleb Williams and 38th in passing yards per game behind the likes of Gardner Minshew Aidan O'Connell Drake Maye and Will Levis. Furthermore it took Bryce Young 23 games to surpass Panthers legend Kyle Allen's 13 games worth of passing yardage in 2019. So if your argument is he became a head and shoulders better passer over the course of the second half of the season the reality is we're still waiting to see that growth this season. And there is nothing controversial or vitriolic about saying so in the mind of a rational
    • Cam regularly threw for less than 200 yards and nobody questioned he was elite. He averaged 219 yds per game for his career.  You seem to be way too hung up on yards as a stat.  By that definition Jameis Winston should have been MVP by now.
    • So... what metrics for production do you believe display these issues/limitations best? Are we only using total passing yards, height, and weight thresholds? If so, then what are those thresholds?
