Why the Panthers need to cut DeAngelo Williams

New Carolina Panthers GM Dave Gettleman inherits a roster that has a lot of talent, but also has all kinds of salary cap problems. That means Gettleman is going to have to make some tough decisions fast.

It doesn't get much tougher than cutting the franchise's all-time leading running back DeAngelo Williams at the age of 29. But Williams is a luxury the Panthers can no longer afford.

Williams is set to make $4.75 million this season in base salary. He has an $8.2 million cap figure, according to ESPN.com's Pat Yasinskas. Cutting Williams and designating him a June first cut would ultimately save the Panthers $3.4 million in cap space for this season, according to Yasinskas.

Why? so we can continue starting inferior talent. If DeAngelo's talent has deminished then Stewart must really suck because he has shown me nothing that says he is as good as Williams.

What has DeAngelo done when he wasn't playing the worst defensive unit in NFL history of late that has impressed?

I dont. It takes FB posts calling him out for him to finally play like he should

That's ignorant man. Stewart sucked before he got injured this year too. Did DW, Stew, and Tolbert all 3 forget how to run in 1 season or was it the way they were used? Chud's read option infatuation and giving each back 6 carries a game was the problem. Once we lined up in a pro set with a full back Deangelo looked like his old self again. And that's with the patchwork oline of 3rd stringers we had out there. People keep saying DW only had a huge game against New Orleans...Did Stewart have one breakout game at all? He got to start what 4 games before guess what he went down. Tolbert does everything that Stewart does well ALOT cheaper. We don't have someone with Deangelo's breakaway ability. There's a good chance we let DW go for cap reasons but I don't get the hate on him, Chud Mike Martz'd this team, it's not fair to blame the backs for it. Put DW on Washington, Houston, or Denver and he's a top 5 RB this year.

    • KP is not a straight up carbon copy but they look awful close to me.  T
    • You are right. At the same time I don’t think people are watching games going come on Bryce put it on the ground or sail it OB or whatever. They just have trouble seeing him turning his 3 or four or five top games of 2025 into the weekly standard outing. Which you expect for the kind of money he will ask for (speaking for myself anyway).
    • In terms of comparing Pickett and Young's arm talent it's basically a push at best. Pickett is sitting at 6.2 yards per pass attempt for his career while Bryce sits at 6.0 Last season Bryce was 6.3 in yards per pass attempt. Only Justin Fields Spencer Rattler (both 6.2) Kyler Murray (6.0) 41 year old Joe Flacco (6.0) 44 year old Phillip Rivers (5.9) rookie Cam Ward (5.9) and Tyrod Taylor (5.8) had less pass yards per attempt than Bryce Young in his third season as a starter. Folks going around acting as if it is beyond the pale to say Pickett might have a better arm than Young are living in an alternate reality. You can choose to not believe your own eyes after 46 games but everyone else will acknowledge reality and move forward accordingly.
