The Carolina Panthers have signed seventh-round draft choice (216th overall) Captain Munnerlyn from South Carolina, the team announced Wednesday.

A 5-8, 186-pound cornerback who also returned kickoffs and punts, Munnerlyn played in 36 games with 28 starts for the Gamecocks prior to entering the NFL following his junior season. He finished his career with 97 tackles, two sacks, five interceptions, 19 passes defensed, two forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries in addition to averaging 22.8 yards on 23 kickoff returns and 7.6 yards on 37 punt returns.

Munnerlyn started all 13 games as a junior in 2008 when he recorded 44 tackles and five passes defensed to go along with an 84-yard kickoff return and an 81-yard blocked field goal return for a touchdown against Kentucky. He earned All-SEC first-team honors as a junior after producing 47 tackles, three interceptions and seven passes defensed. Munnerlyn becomes the first of the Panthers' seven draft choices to sign

    • One thing I didn’t consider is how thin this draft is at quarterback. That’s going to drive up the market for backups and borderline starters like Willis, Jones, and Jameis Winston. Because of that, we’ll most likely be priced out of the market for this tier of backup.
    • We've already beat the #1 seed twice, why not one more? (Packers and Rams were both #1 seed at the time we played)
    • My determination has come down to this. Based on recent QB history, has Bryce's improvement warranted 50m per season? Lamar is the only original team QB to play on his 5th year. The others took major deals at the end of the 3rd, before or just after the option was signed. Chances are, we're getting asked for the same.  I haven't rooted for Bryce to fail. I've rooted for him to succeed so big that them signing that extension would give me no worries about our future at QB at all. We haven't seen that level of play consistently that this year. We haven't seen it in the past 6 games.  We're about to be at a threshold with Bryce and I worry about what this front office will do. We have a history of bad decision making and Morgan has been part of that group making those decisions. I don't want Carolina in the same boat Arizona and Miami are right now. It has nothing to with being right. It has to do with wanting to win for more than a single season. We've never had back to back winning seasons. Faith in their abilities is not warranted at this point.
