NBA / Sports Memorabilia Help! Bought A Throwback Jersey...

Recommended Posts

So today I pulled a JasonLuckyDog and hit up the Goodwill in order to start my jersey collection I've been meaning to get into.

I happened to see this cool looking Nets throwback jersey, so I decided to buy it on a whim without looking up the guy's name.

The condition is surprisingly pretty good (even though the second picture's lighting makes it look weird, it's actually not that faded), and I got it for $3.50 so no big deal obviously.

Turns out the dude, Drazen Petrovic, has had his #3 jersey retired by the Nets after he died in 1993. I've read that his success in the NBA had a huge influence on the popularity of basketball in Europe. This jersey is a throwback to the 1992-1993 season I believe, judging by this tag...

So basically my main question is whether this jersey is an authentic jersey or a "swingman" jersey. It's not a replica because the stuff isn't screen pressed on or whatever, and it is an official NBA jersey with everything stitched on, so I'm tryna figure out whether it's authentic or swingman.

Also, Reebok did NBA jerseys from 2001-2006, if that's relevant at all.

From a quick eBay search, my purchase could be worth in excess of $100, even if it's just a swingman!! So exciting for my first Goodwill jersey hunt ever.

Anyways, thanks for any help!!

I found some on eBay from different jersey makers, and then even some total knockoff brand ones for $40-50 or so. So I'm sure a legit one must be worth something. Guess you're right, there's only one way to find out.

Still might keep it as a cool piece to start my collection from though...

I highly recommend that you watch the ESPN 30 for 30: Once Brothers.  It is a documentary on Petrovic and Vlade Divac and actually gives you a really cool back story on Petrovic that will make you appreciate your find even more.  Here is the link to the piece: http://espn.go.com/30for30/film?page=once-brothers

I'm sure it's legit, but just because stuff is sewn on doesn't make it legit. I have a Steve Smith jersey that is a counterfeit but has sewn on everything, came with Rebok tags on it and everything.

I suppose that's true, but everything looks exactly like the official ones I've seen online, and the back tags look legit. Plus I can't think of a reason a knockoff jersey maker would bother making a 3XL with +2 length, but who knows. You could be right.

    • In 2025 Sam Darnold had over 1k more passing yards than Bryce Young on 1 less pass attempt. Repeat that to yourself several times and let it sink in. I absolutely love it when people come on here and invoke Sam Darnold like some gotcha. Darnold is the physical prototype for what anyone needs in a franchise QB. All the physical tools. Few people thought he would put it all together on the mental side of the position. He used to make some of the worst decisions you would ever see. At times in the past he made up for that with absurd throws and athleticism. But make no mistake whatsoever no matter how you feel about our starting QB. Bryce Young is a completely opposite conundrum. He lacks virtually any and all physical tools and athleticism and his elite processing is really mediocre at best on a good day and horrific on a bad day. These are realities people should have already been addressing instead of quadrupling down in year four.
    • The nice thing about the timing of Bryce's contract at least is that it's going to match up with the 2027 Draft Class. No excuses, he either becomes Rams 2nd half Bryce year long, or we draft his replacement.  Nothing wrong with carrying Bryce on his 5th year expiring and a 1st round rookie waiting in the wings. Let the rookie sit until the trade deadline, deal Bryce to a needy team at the time, profit.
    • Yeah they were bad QBs - but QB's that stayed on their teams for several years.  BY is better than all of those.
