Bucs NFC South Team of the Decade

Per ESPN. We're in 2nd

Thoughts? Or should we even care?

Although the NFC South hasn't been around for a full decade, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers have been declared the division's team of the decade.

That's according to ESPN.com, which used a formula concocted by NFC West colleague Mike Sando, who works part time as a rocket scientist, as well as a little bit of the human touch. I argued Tampa Bay's Super Bowl title should move them up a few spots higher than their ranking by the formula and Sando agreed.

The Bucs ranked ninth in the league and were the only NFC South team with a winning percentage over .500 for the decade. Carolina ranked No. 13, which seems pretty fair on the surface.

But I'd like to throw out a couple of scenarios that demonstrate just how close Carolina was to cracking the top 10. Let's suppose George Seifert's 1-15 disaster of 2001 never happened. The Bucs have 76 wins this decade. The Panthers have 71. Let's say Seifert's last season was a 6-10 year and the Panthers would have as many wins as the Bucs.

Carolina also came a lot closer to winning in their one Super Bowl appearance than a lot of people remember. If the Panthers had beaten the Patriots in Houston, they probably would be ranked ahead of Tampa Bay.

The Saints ranked No. 19 and the Falcons No. 21, which goes to show the importance of putting together back-to-back winning seasons. That's been nearly impossible for the NFC South teams throughout their existence.

One Caveat . . . It ain't over yet.

Unless they look at the 2009 season as in the next decade because the Super Bowl is in 2010

So the Question is can we get 6 more wins this year than the Bucs?

if we win the next super bowl, it'll be in 2010, another decade. so technically the Bucs will still be team of the decade based on their win in 2002. I won't dispute it because our regular season record is under .500 and we lost a super bowl while they won one.

The 2001 season screwed us. The -15 games killed our winning percentage. Heck even one of our typical 7-9 season would have put us around the top 5 in winning percentage.

Yeah the Bucs had the one Super Bowl, but they haven't done crap since. Their SB win was at the beginning of the decade too, so that says a lot.

    • So Willis had a good game against a poor defense and all of a sudden he is worth 50 million and is guaranteed to be better than Young. LOL I know he looked good in the 3 games he started, and I think he will have success long term, but anyone signing him up for a long term contract for 50 million is taking a huge risk.
    • Is he really though? Rivera was past his prime and probably shouldn't have even started 2019 so his firing wasn't really unexpected or unwarranted. Rhule lasted two and a half years which was about one year too long in my opinion. Bringing him back that third year certainly wasn't impulsive and I would say Tepper was more patient than he should have been. Wilks finished out that third season and did pretty good but most everyone could see he really wasn't anything more than an intern HC. Bringing him back was not the long term answer so not bringing him back was the correct call. Hiring Reich was a mistake from the beginning and he recognized that fairly quickly. I am sure he knew he was going to catch a lot of sh*t for firing him so quickly ( and boy did he ) but it was absolutely the right thing to do given everything that was going on. The firing may have looked impulsive, but I think it was him recognizing he had royally f*ck up and just dealt with it instead of letting it fester.  That brings us to Canales. 2025 was only his second season and yet he delivered 8 wins and the NFC South title. And while that might not sound great, given the lack of talent and cap space they started with, it's a strong step in the right direction. I couldn't imagine Tepper not being pleased with their progress given the crap the Panthers' have been though under his ownership.
