is goodell to blame?

could this have been put into one of the other threads about this? sure...but it get's lost in all of the blind rage so i just decided to start a new thread about it.

goodell is a popular guy to hate because of all the rule changes. this isn't meant as a defense of goodell at all.

it's DEFINITELY not meant as a defense of the silly rule changes.

it's meant to educate about the source of these rule changes.

The NFL has established a strong set of rules through the years focused on player safety, designed to promote fair competition while attempting to minimize risk of harm to the player. While many of these rules have focused on reducing contact to the head and neck of players, other changes have protected players from orthopedic and other injuries.

The development of a thoughtful and comprehensive set of appropriately protective rules and policies has always been, and continues to be, an evolving process. The NFL continually evaluates how rules can best be integrated into the game to address safety and health issues.

Each year the NFL Competition Committee conducts a complete review of player injuries and discusses means by which the NFL can reduce them through the implementation of new rules, or by clarifying or strengthening enforcement of existing rules.

Rules the league has established or changed for the protection of players have not only had a positive impact in the NFL, but have subsequently been incorporated at other levels of play, including collegiate, high school and youth programs. Through the NFL's ongoing partnerships and educational initiatives, the awareness of the importance of rules related to on-field conduct and return-to-play, at all levels and ages, is broadened.

so who are this gang of evil entities responsible for the rule changes?

The Competition Committee, which studies all aspects of the game and recommends rules and policy changes to NFL clubs, consists of the following members:

Rich McKay Atlanta Falcons Chairman Jeff Fisher St. Louis Rams   Stephen Jones Dallas Cowboys   Marvin Lewis Cincinnati Bengals   John Mara New York Giants   Mark Murphy Green Bay Packers   Ozzie Newsome Baltimore Ravens   Rick Smith Houston Texans   Mike Tomlin Pittsburgh Steelers

and then there's these guys that help them with ideas and areas that they think should be considered...

The subcommittee, chaired by Pro Football Hall of Fame coach JOHN MADDEN, reports to the full Competition Committee prior to the annual NFL meeting every March and meets on a regular basis via conference call to discuss player safety, competitive issues, coaching and personnel development and technological innovations.

The Coaches Subcommittee of the Competition Committee consists of the following members:

John Madden Chairman   Tom Coughlin New York Giants   Leslie Frazier Minnesota Vikings   John Harbaugh Baltimore Ravens   Joe Philbin Miami Dolphins   Andy Reid Kansas City Chiefs   Ron Rivera Carolina Panthers   Mike Smith Atlanta Falcons

want to know more?

couple videos of round table discussions concerning the competition committee including half of the committee.

the question is how the committee is formed.

is goodell part of the problem? absolutely. he suggests some rule changes, just like MANY others involved in the game. does he campaign for some rules? yep...just like anyone else. does he carry more weight than anyone? not really.

the point is, i know it's easy to find the one lone evil entity for when things don't go the way we would like, but the truth is, it's a team sport, even with the rules being made. we like to give too much credit to the QB and give the QB to much blame for wins or losses, but most understand that the QB is just one part, albeit a very important part.

where the rule changes are concerned, tho, goodell isn't even the QB. the biggest role he plays in the whole process is that of the guy that is the mouthpiece for the league after rule changes are made. his job isn't to make the changes. his job, where rule changes are concerned, is to be the mouthpiece for the league and the owners who vote on those changes and support them after they are made.

I don't believe that everything that he's done to the league is bad, especially when you single them out. He has to combat a lot of adversity as every day the media and the public generalizes and scrutinizes the league for an apparent "spike" in arrest and incidents, but the statistics have always been and will always be in the favor of the league. More players are out of trouble than in trouble, and it will always be that way. BUT, because outlets like ESPN SUCK and use events like Riley Cooper for cheap ratings, the league is forced to enforce rules that appear to be a "killjoy".

The problem with Goddell is combining the celebration rules with the on-field rules, it's just multiplying the outcry because he's bringing the hammer down pretty hard more than once.

I think Roger gets a bad wrap. He had the lockout, he's had a multitude of lawsuits from former players to usher in the "concussion era", and he's had to deal with essentially changing the entire sport into a new era to keep up with the rest of the world (social media, etc.).

No everything he's done hasn't been great, but he's progressed the NFL a lot.

It's not an easy day to be NFL commish.

At the end of the day though, i am kinda ashamed to be apart of and support such a huge greedy buisness. Even the good things the appear to do makes them money. I love my Panthers, couldnt live without em, but the more i support em the more i pack these rich fugs with my hard earned money..

This is why the uni comp meant so much to me, an oportunity to ruin something of thiers. Hopefully they made money off of adds and not page views.

    • Never been. Going to a concert there Thursday night. Decent tailgating opportunities in the parking area or no? I see people are going to the beer hall to grab a beer to get their parking validated. Seems like a good plan to me. I'd like to smoke a brisket and do a decent spread of food but I just don't know if the parking setup allows for it.

    • Bryce also has a degree in psychology. He has an uncanny ability to compartmentalize things in a way that allows him to enter his second NFL season with optimism that he can still be the player who was worthy of being the No. 1 pick of the 2023 draft despite the kind of rookie year that has destroyed others in his position. Young credits that in part to his past. He graduated from the University of Alabama in three years with a degree in psychology. His father was a therapist in the mental health field for 20 years. His mother was a special education teacher, and his grandfather was a psychologist. https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/40334565/bryce-young-developing-leader-panthers-year-2
