Need advice from military members

ItsNotGonnaBeAlright

The service for my granddad was today. He was given final honors by the USAF Honor Gaurd, and everyone decided that I should be the one presented with the flag that was draped over his coffin. I want to display it in the best way possible, but I'm a little torn over what the display should say. I don't know if I would rather have it display the year he was born and the year he died or the years that he was in service. I can't go off of what I think he would have rather had displayed, because he would have chosen neither (just who he was). I also don't think there will be space to show both.

So if I could ask the military folks around here....which would you rather have shown in that scenario?

Typically, since the flag represents his service to the country a shadow box nameplate or engraving would normally have his dates of service:

(Rank) John A. Smith

United States Air Force

1942-1950

Here are but a couple examples of the proper shadowbox display of the flag:

There are several companies that build these professionally, but you can also purchase them empty and have a reputable picture framer put them together for you.

I have a couple flags presented to me for things I put in the simple triangle shadowbox with a simple brass plate engraved with the information on where, when and what for and attached to the base.

^ That post is perfect. You can always put a "RIP plate" on the back side with maybe the date of his funeral service. Just for you, and you'll always know its there. Maybe even a phrase he used often to remember the good times.

Also, very sorry to hear for your loss. I have great admiration and respect for ALL those who served before me. I go out of my way to talk to the old guys with vet hats on.

    • So we cut him if we don't give him the option?  I'm pretty sure there are players who didn't get the 5th-year option that played year four of their rookie contracts with their draft team.
    • I didn't say do nothing if we don't draft one in the 1st and I"m not counting on a FA to magically become a franchise QB. But signing a FA to be our starter for the year and then re-address the next offseason would be FAR better than reaching on the wrong QB in the 1st this offseason. Feeling we HAVE to find our long term solution just because we need a new QB is how we got into this mess.  We thought Two Gloves would be at worst an average level QB for a few years, that didn't happen, so we went out and traded for Darnold.  That didn't work so we went out and traded for Baker, that didn't work so we went out and traded up to get Bryce. Our last 4 QB moves were all trying to force a solution, none of them worked out, and we're still trying to find Cam's replacement all these years later.  We'd just have been better off spending a year or two building up the rest of the team and going year to year on FA QB's while doing so.  I get it, it will be frustrating to deal with, but then when you find that actual long term solution, they plug right into an already built out roster and you're ready to contend immediately.
    • Great win, should be 3-0 but I'll take 2-1. LaMelo is an MVP caliber player, period.   This is looking like an incredible draft so far. Sion James looking like the exact type of role player that all contending teams need to have, absolute steal in the 2nd. Kalk is a work in progress and I question how much upside he has but he's already been a considerable upgrade at C for us compared to the last several years (outside of healthy Mark which of course was rare).   Really seems like new ownership/front office has change the culture here significantly. Every guy looks bought in now.
