Something Neat I Noticed From Giants Game

I was rewatching the Giants game (side note, where can I buy more hand lotion?) when I was struck by the wonderful play design on Brandon LaFell's second touchdown. Some have mentioned his great stutter-step, but how many of you noticed that Cam perfectly timed a pump fake with LaFell's stutter to sell CB Aaron Ross even more on the pseudo-deep in?

First off, this play came on a 1st and 10, the previous play converting the down on a Steve Smith catch. Pre-snap, Cam recognizes the single-high safety look, as the Giants have positioned the strong safety Ryan Mundy inside, and the impending linebacker blitz, so he knows he has LaFell on the outside of the field. He communicates the information with a hand signal to LaFell and to Smith, who are looking back at Cam.

The Giants rush five, and the offensive line each pick up a man and keep the pressure away from Cam who has a perfect pocket to step up and throw. LaFell executes a fantastic stutter step that completely freezes Aaron Ross, who is looking back at Cam. At that exact instant, Cam pumps the ball, further selling the idea that LaFell is about to cut his route short, enticing Ross to try to cut off and intercept a pass that will never come. To Ross' credit, he actually recovers very well from the fake, but the moment of hesitation leaves him flat-footed and trailing the ball as Cam lofts a gentle throw to the back of the endzone that allows LaFell to run under it.

What is so neat about this play is that it shows that both Cam and LaFell recognized the opportunity the defensive front presented them and worked in concert to manufacture separation and a safe throw for a touchdown. This is real progress in Cam's development as a quarterback and LaFell's development as a receiver, and hopefully we will see more of the these types of plays in the future.

This is the "magical" year three where every good little QB gets his wings and begins to blossom into the player he will be.

 

I don't believe that crap but this particular play does seem to indicate growth. 

 

Nice write up. 

 

I would say I would read it again but.......I already have.  Not sure if I will read it a third go 'round but I might as I like pictures.  Know what I mean?

Get the feeling that Newton to LaFell is the future of the Panthers, just as Delhomme to Smith once was...know what I mean?

 

Well, with the market being the way it is now-a-days, better be careful if he has a good year this year and next.  As the performance starts to show the price begins to rise. 

 

 

How many more years do we have LaFell under contract?

      I definitely respect your opinion more than Tracy McGrady, Vince Carter, and Carmelo Anthony (whom I just watched on their show, all saying NOBODY wants to get the Hornets in the post-season). You win.

      For all the good feelings about Bryce Young, when you read between the lines, it's what DC says and doesn't say that makes us know that Bryce hasn't necessarily been the supercomputer that they thought he would be. This season, Bryce has to make a tangible progression on the field. "A big part of it is being able to operate at the line of scrimmage — not in the huddle — when we want to, and he’s certainly capable of that," Canales said about Young. "It’s not solely on him. It’s a group that’s pretty young. You have to trust all the guys to go up there, communicate verbally or nonverbally and execute what we’re doing. We’ve made huge strides in that regard. His ability to alter things based on what they’re giving you will give us another edge, which he’s continued to grow and had some great examples down the stretch where he identified things they were doing, got us to the right check and capitalized on some plays. Want to see him do that more when it’s appropriate. We don’t need to be changing things just to change it." The implications, perhaps insinuations, are pretty evident. Bryce is just going to have to do better. "And then for Bryce, it’s the identification of early on the cues that the defense are giving us, to be able to eliminate parts of your progression before the ball’s even snapped. That happens with time. I’ve seen quarterbacks really own and master, which allows them to play lightning fast." Obviously Bryce isn't necessarily picking things up as fast as Canales would like, and I can only assume that Canales is making comparisons to Russell Wilson, Geno Smith and Baker Mayfield. But, of course, not everyone picks things up at the same rate. Bryce's pace has left Canales wanting for more. During the coming season, I don't believe that it will be good enough for Bryce to start putting things together in December, evidence of the light switch being on is going to have to show itself in September. Basically, it's really the moment that we've all been waiting for, the one that we thought should've happened earlier, the one that brings Bryce's accountability in the spotlight. On an off note, perhaps to that end, we should consider the possible implications upon the draft, but that's another story.
