Cardinals quietly #2 in rush defense...#1 in yards per attempt.

They have a terrible OL, I think our pass rush has another big game.

Some poster not to be named just plays both sides so he can say he is right in the end. He says Palmer is Good and their defense is good but we will win. That way if Arizona wins he can talk about Palmer and their offense or about their defense. If we win he can say he predicted that. Either way he has an excuse. Now lets see who responds to argue with this. Which then proves he even knows he is doing it.'

Once again, the three rush defenses the Panthers have played this year have all been below average statistically:

Seattle: 18th

Buffalo: 24th

Giants: 28th

Arizona's stats have probably been inflated by playing against some teams who can't run: St. Louis....and by teams who don't place as much emphasis on it...Detroit and N.O. for example.

But anytime you go through a quarter of an NFL season and you are only giving up 3.0 ypc, you are doing something right as a defense. You are not blowing assignments. You are in position to make plays. You are well coached.

I am hoping the improvement in Carolina's ability to run the football is legitimate. I want them to be able to line up against anyone and run the football. (That is awfully tough in the NFL).

This game will be the first true test of their ability to do that this season.

And if they can't run consistently...we will find out a lot more about other areas of this offense as well...

Not going to read the entire thread, so sorry if this has been stated:

They played the Rams (bad line, no RBs and an immobile QB), The Lions (no real good running attack and suspect OL; immobile QB), The Saints (pass-first team with a somewhat immobile QB), and Tampa Bay (you know this story).

They have a solid D, but they are not that great.  A mobile QB can add 40-60 yards and freeze one person in the box who would be stuffing the run.

lets put this in context.  The Giants and the Bills might be 28th and 24th in total yards but both are giving up only 3.9 yards a rush or less than 1 yard per rush less than the Cardinals.  I attribute that to the Carolina effect.  So 3.0 might be near the top but honestly the difference between the best rush defense and the worse is around 2 yards a carry.  We rank 3.7 per carry and we have played Buffalo and Seattle who both represent top rushing teams.  Sure it will be a challenge for us to run  against the Cardinalsbut it will be even a bigger challenge for them to run.  They are averaging 75 yards on the ground or  3.4 yards a carry.  Meanwhile we are averaging 150 yards a game on 4.4 yards a carry.  What do you think is going to give first our defense or theirs.

Truth is that we have to take whatever they give us.  If they want to stack the  box with 8 or 9 to stop the run then Cam has to be able to throw them out of it.  Most teams try to take away the run to force Cam to beat them.  He will just have to prove that he can do more than run the ball. I hope he can put another 400 passing yards on them only this time we need to be more stout in defense.

And all those teams ran better when not against AZ....and AZ shut down all those teams with out there stud MLB who returns today. He makes not only three run but pass D better.

Cam is always the ultimate wildcard.

What makes them a scary D is how they matchup against our offense. Football is always about matchups anyway

To OP

Panthers passing won't stay that low all year. It will definitely move up, and it will probably happen this game.

And of course, if I was the Panthers, I would "toss it" against the Cardinals defense, especially if there's such a differential between their rushing and passing defense. Panthers offense has to take what the defense gives them/are vulnerable with.

But don't expect the Panthers offense to stay this low in passing yards all year. Remember, the Panthers played Seattle, and Rivera wet the bed with the lead against Buffalo (and left another potential 30-50 passing yds on the table), and the Panthers had a big lead against the Giants (so yo know Rivera's going to run it out/down). Plus they've played one less game than most others NFL teams following their bye.

Plus, its' only the 4th game of the season.

Doesnt matter. They played St. Louis (no running game/ terrible offense), Detroit (no Reggie Bush), New Orleans (no running game), and TB (Glennon at QB/ focus on Martin). Cam brings a whole different dimension to the game. Arizona will have to stay honest for both Cam's passing and running abilities which will free up lanes for Dwill.

They are giving up points bc their offense is putrid.....have worn out like the Saints for example.

Putrid on 3rd specifically. They are getting the chunk plays.

They also have played strong D without their best player who returns today. They are tough on D.

Best D we have played to date

Seattle?

They proved your point.  I felt we were outplayed today, but I also felt outcoached.  They made our OL step up.  They knew that they can't.
