SPV Mock Draft

Recommended Posts

Well, it is the middle of December. It is always a yearly holiday tradition for Carolina Panther fans to start looking forward to the draft. However, since we are not a poo team this year for the first time in half a decade, we have put it on hold for the most part. Still though, I've been having an itch to do a mock draft for a while now. So while we wait for the Jets game in two days, why don't you take a look? This reflects our current standings in the draft, and I will be doing no trades.

1st Round - Pick 27 - Kelvin Benjamin - WR - FSU

Add me to the Kelvin bandwagon. It was either between this or Jordan Mathews. Mathews may be a more finished product, has done a lot with a shitty team over the years, and is basically a "rock solid" choice. Kelvin however has much more upside, but only had one good year and is the definition of a boom or bust. Normally I would think we would take Mathews, or reach for an o-linemen (the 1st round OTs will be long gone), but god dammit, this is Riverboats Ron's team now, and we take chances.

Benjamin completely destroyed Loucheiz Purifoy with 212 yards and 3 touchdowns. He also destroyed Purifoy's potential millions, as he was considered a possible 1st round corner earlier. That talk has ended now.

Kelvin is only a sophomore, but it is likely he is coming out. If he were to stay for his junior season and refine his game (as he is still raw), he would be a top 10 pick in the 2015 draft. Buyer beware though, Kelvin is a guy who can make all the tough catches, but drops gimmes occasionally.

2nd Round - Pick 27 - Corey Robinson - OT - SC

There are a ton of OTs that have a 2nd round grade. Hurst is an early 2nd rounder while Collins will probably go 15th. Robinson however is all over the place in the 2nd round in the mock drafts. The 6-7 247 pound behemoth has great lateral agility, meaning that he'll be a perfect RT for now. Plus, he has practiced against Jadeveon Clowney for years, the best DE in years and a possible future Atlanta Falcon. Could this be useful perhaps? Probably not, but at the very least, we will never see Bryon fuging Bell ever start again!!

3rd Round - 27th Pick - Damian Swann - CB - UGA

(Picture Broken, thanks Zod)

Solid corner to boost our secondary. Was projected to be a late first, early second this year, but has had a bit of a down season. Despite this, he is probably still the best corner available at this position, and is still already better than any other corner on our roster, so it's a pick.

4th Round - 27th pick- Deion Belue - CB - Alabama

Yep, a midround double dip. Deion Belue is a member of the always formidable Crimson Tide defense. Although not the best player on the team, he is still a solid, very competitive corner with one of the best footwork for a corner in this draft class.

5th Round - 27th Pick - Kevin Pierre Louis - OLB - Boston College

A linebacker? Really? Yes. Kevin Pierre Louis is a very underrated player who is a projected 5th round pick. The senior was made 1st all ACC this year with 6 sacks and 104 tackles, but his best year was arguably 2011, where he was Keeks right hand man. During that year he had multipe tackles for losses. While he doesn't have the great pass rushing skills like AJ has, he is a great run stopper. In short yardage situations nobody would be able to run outside or inside. I figure it would be a great pick up for our OLB rotations.

6th Round - 27th Pick - Chris Burnette - OG - Georgia

An average guard, he could be good insurance just in case Kugbila get's hurt again and we don't have to start a converted DT as guard.

7th Round - 12 Overall - Cody Hoffman - WR - BYU

We started this with a WR, let's end this with a WR. The all time BYU touchdown receiving leader would be great depth and would be able to hold his own against 4th-5th string DBs. Assuming we say goodbye to Lafell, I think getting another WR would do us plenty good.

For all of you guys who remember the Giants a few years ago drafting JPP even though they were loaded i would put money that we add another DE/DT through the draft. IF easley fell to us in the third i think Gettleman would take him.

I agree.  I think Easley would be a great addition.  James Gayle would be nice somewhere around the 4th or 5th.

For me:

First Round| Kelvin Benjamin WR (FSU), Austin Seferian-Jenkins TE (Washington), Cyrus Kouandjio OT (Alabama)

Second Round| Greg Robinson OT (Auburn), Ifo Ekpre-Olomu CB (Oregon), Allen Robinson WR (Penn St)

Third Round| Cameron Fleming OT (Stanford), La'el Collins G/OT (LSU), Kyle Fuller CB (Virginia Tech)

Fourth Round| Seantrel Henderson OT (Miami), E.J. Gaines CB (Mizzou), Dominique Easley DE/DT (Florida)

Fifth Round| Aaron Donald DE/OLB (Pittsburgh), Marcel Jensen TE (Fresno St), Donte Moncrief WR (Ole Miss)

Sixth Round| Terrence Mitchell CB (Oregon), Justin Britt OT (Mizzou)

Seventh Round| Colt Lyeria TE (Oregon), Wesley Johnson OT (Vanderbilt)

I could be wrong, but looks like, starting in the second round, you are 1 round off with a bunch of the guys listed.  Meaning that the guys you have listed in the 2nd will probably go in the 1st and listed in the 3rd the 2nd.  Seantrel and Colt are interesting guys to list.

I disagree. I foresee a lot of great talent dropping due to how stacked this draft will be for QBs, WRs, OTs, DTs and CBs. Marqise Lee, for example, could very well drop into the third round simply because he's had an off-year thanks to injuries. Keep in mind, there's also the combine effect. A kid, who is relatively unknown, could jump up 2-3 rounds by having a stellar workout (ex. Sharrif Floyd, DJ Hayden, EJ Manuel, etc).

Colt has a ton of potential. He'll likely go undrafted because of what went down but I'd be willing to spend a sixth or seventh round pick on him. Look at Fauria for Detriot. He's been a monster in the Red Zone for them.

Henderson is ideally worth a late second round pick but I see him getting picked up in the late rounds after another suspension. He's a massive body but very athletic and nimble. Seantrel is worth the risk.

No doubt guys move around a ton between now and then.  Imagine if the Panthers could grab Lee in the second?  let alone the 3rd?   He'll got first or high second unless he runs about a 4.7 at the combine.

Colt does have a bunch of potential, but he's got a huge rap-sheet.  He left the team and got busted with coke.  Not a guy that the Panthers normally draft.

Henderson is a huge person and huge talent.  How does a guy that is unmotivated as a college player suddenly become motivated when he's getting paid?  I see him having similar issues as Otah, but I could be wrong.

Would love Kelvin (1st) and Greg Robinson (2nd) or best available OT (1s) and Allen Robinson (2nd).

However, I do not see La'el being available in the 3rd, Seantrel in the 4th, and Moncrief being in the 5th. All these guys with a good combine will be high picks in May.

La'el and Moncrief might be gone by the time I project them to go (then again, Patton was supposedly a late first rounder last year and he went in the fourth) but Seantrel most definitely won't. He'll be lucky to be drafted in the mid-rounds. Two suspensions in two years does not bold well for his stock.

Patton being in the Confrence USA with weaker competition was probably the reason why he dropped.

Henderson even with the trouble is still too intriguing of a prospect to fall that low. Henderson 'could' potentially be a late 1st rounder, but most likely a 2nd rounder. Remember Janoris Jenkins who went in the 2nd (2012) and Mathieu a 3rd rounder this past April?

True, but that didn't stop TY Hilton from being drafted in the second round. Patton was riding a wave of praise after a good workout and showing at the Bowl game.

It depends on the squad. It's possible that he could be drafted earlier but it'd have to a desperate team with a gunslinger at GM. New England and Cincinnati come to mind. That said, 2014 will be loaded with OT talent.

I agree.

One guy I wouldn't mind if The Panthers drafted 2-3 rounds earlier would be Aaron Donald. The guy has Geno Atkins written all over him. In my opinion, he's the most versatile and explosive defensive talent no one is talking about (prefer him over Easley despite being 6'0", 285 lbs). I believe he has 26 TFLs and 10 sacks on the season. Aaron would be a fantastic replacement for Edwards.

donald had a great year.  He just won a couple of big awards.  He'll be interesting to watch.  Easley was the best defensive player in college football before he got hurt.
