Panthers likely to begin contract discussions with Cam this Offseason

I'm talking about the rookie cap, not the salary cap.

The rookie cap was instated to prevent rookies from making obscene amounts of money in their first contract. Some posters here seem to think rookies who had that cap will demand extraordinary contracts to recoup what they "lost," but according to a number of guys inside the league, that is inaccurate. They will get a fair contract, but nothing extreme-which makes sense from a logical standpoint because it's hard for a layer in his first few seasons to play at a level which justifies a 100 million dollar pay increase.

 That's my view

uhh what?

Are you suggesting Cam is going to walk away from the Panthers because they won't pay him $30 mil a year?

Not at all. Just the amount of leverage Cam has. If you look at the Game today our top RB only rushed for 33 yards. 33 freaking freaking yards. This could be either an OL or RB issue. If not Cam, maybe Cam's agent might mention to him that he could win much easier than this one man wrecking crew they have going on. This isn't right. Brady, Manning, Flacco, Rodgers, Romo, etc. aren't working this hard to win games. Cam is doing the same thing he was doing at Auburn.

As much as I'm a panther fan but this plain lazy football on the offensive side. There is nothing hard about drafting just Cam. Putting the proper pieces around him so not to overwork him is what good GMs do.

But there is another impetus for him to sign a reasonable contract. The threat of injury. No player wants to hold out on a $5M contract for two more years with say $18M staring you in the face. Almost no QB has ever told their rookie team to stuff it over a few million. They all want to get extended ASAP.

Both sides want a deal.

Add to this the teams with lots of cap space are usually the crappiest. Next year will be Bills, Browns, Jags etc. It is hard to find a team that will be both competitive and have the money.

Cam is only 24 years old. He's not too concerned about injuries. They rushed him 12 times this game. That's overworking him. $20 mil is nothing for a franchise QB like Cam these days. There are at least 15 teams that would get on board to become relevant. It's crazy how panthers fans knock Cam about his accuracy, meanwhile when I read the Texans forum they view Cam as a pure passer and describe other young QBs as "he is no Cam Newton". Cam is well regarded in this league.

Someone is making some sense on this fansite.

It's does seem some folks see Cam more as a workhorse and don't give a fug about his longivity. And judging by the attitudes of many, the Defense is the greatest thing on this team. No one gave a fug about Cam and the Offense when the defense was down for two seasons and no one give a fug about them now, except to say, they aren't doing much and giving all of the praises to the Defense.

I think that's the problem.

Many Panther fans don't know the value of Cam.

Though we love to complain about media people's view of him (whether real or for publicity's sake on their part), he's highly regarded amongst NFL people and observers that truly watch the game (who know a good QB when they see it, and not just a good system, playmakers protecting/making him look better).

I heard two NY radio guys who I hold in good regard recently (i.e., they actually watch, and just don't go by name or media memes), go down every QB in the league vs Eli Manning for the next 4 years, and they both said "Oh NO" so quickly and strongly for Cam Newton (along with a few others), it would have made your head spin out of the ten they selected.

I don't think Many Panther fans realize how much Cam is really worth (on the open market, or to the Panthers).

They would, if he had play making receivers, a better OC, and/or if when he leaves!!

There are indeed a lot of Panthers fans who are just much hypocrites as those in the media. Some will sing the praises of much weaker QBs  over Cam but still expect more out of him than the rest of the team.

This might be the only team in the NFL where you could cut every WR on the Roster and replace them with UFAs and still put up points & wins. This is no joke how bad this WR corps is. If I were Cam I would tell management to pay me the additional salary they'd normally give to a franchise caliber receiver. It kills me that not one receiver could step up today.

20 mil a year no he isn't there yet. Cam needs to improve his accuracy and start leading his receivers on throws. Once he starts doing that good then maybe.

The organization gets to make demands like that just as soon as they stop requiring him to be our leading rusher and passer for the offense to work.

    • 100%. And these same people will claim you have an agenda. You can't have it every way. We had the lowest rated defense in the league last year. Statistically the worst ever. By PFF grades (for whatever that's worth- but they are readily accepted, used, and conveyed by most "reputable" sources), the defense was the worst ever. Not only that, PFF rated our receiving corp the worst in football last season. The absolute worst... out of 32 teams. Which is why regardless of the lip service Canales and Morgan paid to the current guys, they knew it would be criminal not to give Bryce more help. People fixating on team stats and not taking these things into context are stupid, plain and simple, and I'm for one thankful they're not running this team (or probably anything for that matter bc they obviously can't discern reality. Again, going back to the eyeball test these Narrative Nancies seem to hate so much, did they not see the windows Bryce was putting balls into? Have the generally not watched much NFL? Please, please show me the film where all these NFL QBs are making throws like this to this point Bryce was "below average" down the stretch compared to them. Bryce made more wow throws in that 3 game stretch of the Bucs, Chiefs, and Eagles than every other QB combined in all the years since since Cam got hurt I genuinely am baffled by people that can watch throws like that and act like it's nothing. I guarantee you Steve Spagnola, Todd Bowles, and and Vic Fangio didn't think it was nothing after watching the little guy torch them with players those teams would be embarrassed to trot out at the skill position players. The national media spent all year making excuses for Mahomes not having elite weapons when he had multiple 1st & 2nd round talents at the skill positions along with future HoFers in Kelce and Hopkins. Bryce wasn't throwing for 300 yards every week with David Moore and Adam Theilen in spite of jaw dropping throws and you want to say the guy played below average. For those people, again, we ain't watching the same sport. And the name calling doesn't change that... The vitriol and projection... it's off the effing charts with these people.
    • "Well you see if you remove this terrible game that terrible game this other terrible game and then focus on these games you'll see he's actually one of the better QB's in the league and he's actually as good as Jayden Daniels". My god this place is delusional. I love it.
