My question is if we tag Hardy and trade him, would we still get any kind of hit against the cap because of the franchise tag? In the old system, the team that trades for the player is the one who deals with the cap hit. Yet I don't know about this new system. Some people were talking yesterday that we would still have to use up some cap space because of the franchise tag, no matter if we do trade them. Is this true, or are people just talking nonsense?

It works the same way now, people just don't want to accept it. We'd immediately be on the hook for any and all guaranteed money at the signing of the deal, which would immediately accelerate against our cap at the moment of trading him.

This isn't how it works. An RFA is restricted to us in free agency, allowing us to be allowed to sign him and match any and all offer sheets.

Hardy is an UFA, meaning he's on the open market. The non-exclusive tag does not apply here.

Not exactly.

If we tag him, he cannot sign with another team. He has to sign the tag or sit out. The only way he could sign elsewhere would be if we released the tag.

Yes, but that's use the franchise tag.

As of right now, though, hardy is on the open market. We have no exclusive rights to him (we would if he was restricted) until we tag him.

Then there is no way we tag him and take the hit against the cap. We really can only afford 5-8M for him this year not the 13M or so. Based on DG he seemed to imply the same. I really hope Hardy can work something out and play for 10M total over the next two years.

Free agency is not open yet and he is still under contract with the Panthers. Teams will be allowed to tag players at a certain date.....before free agency opens.

As for tagging and then getting 2 firsts, that IS for RFA's.

If we tagged him, his only option are to sign the tender or sit out. Another team could not offer more and pay us picks...unless we agreed to trade him for said compensation.

Too many here are confusing the franchise tag and RDA's tenders.

No. The 2 firsts are for non-exclusive franchise tagged players. When you use the non-exclusive tag, it does allow for other teams to steal the player from you, but obviously at a very high cost.

I believe the highest compensation for RFA is a first and third, and that is dependent on what sort of tender you put on the player.

Remember Sean Gilbert? He was a non-exclusive franchise tagged player that didn't want to return to Washington. We wanted him and had to give up 2 first round picks for the right to take him from Washington.

He ain't gona go Cleveland but the rams would be a good fit for him, but I can't see them giving up two firsts when tent prob need other positions like a qb instead of Bradford or more offensive weapons! As I said yesterday texans have stated publicly they wana trade or exchange the first pick if negotiate there number one and a third round pick for the trade of hardy id be happy with that

The Texans wouldn't give up the right to Clowney for Hardy. No offense to Hardy. Plus, they didn't say they wanted to trade their 1st, they're just open to it. It's just the right thing to say by any GM.

    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
    • In fairness, she is ensuring she is talked about.  People really aren’t going out there way to bring her up.  It’s some weird poo.  She would end up getting talked about given her actions if she was 40. Bill realizing some of these high end “companions” got a game of their own.  That’s what I don’t think Bill saw coming.
