Rivera wins PFWA Coach of the Year award

Awesome!!  Well deserved.  When "it" clicked for Riverboat he became a head coach.  Props to him for making changes.  He even admits he has lots to learn. Willing to learn, make adjustments...how cool is that?  Glad it paid off for him. Hope he is a successful HC coach for the Panthers for many years to come.

As much as it pains me to say it, Bellicheck likely deserves the official award this year.  What he did with all of the key missing pieces to end up where the Patriots are vying for a spot in the title match-up is pretty damn spectacular.

If the AFC had not been so awful this year I would agree with you. But how many great-to-elite teams were in the AFC? Broncos/Pats/.....maybe Bengals. Not exactly murderers row.

Belichick did it in the AFC East.

Rivera did it in the NFC South.

Even a weakened NFC South is better than that division at its best.

Oh it's cool for sure I just wish he would get the AP award as well.

He'll probably lose to Reid or Kelly or someone like that for that one though.

I would have expected Reid's playoff collapse to knock him out of the running, but sadly that could now be said of Rivera also.

(though I'd argue Reid's performance was worse)

I dunno.  The W-L between the NFCS and AFCE were split down the middle.  I'd agree that the overall schedule was not nearly as daunting, but the question would end up being this for me:

What would other coaches do in Bellicheck's position if they lost their two star receiving TEs, their monster NT, another interior D-Lineman, key LB, key Safety, and rotational RB while ramping up the offense to be completely retooled towards the running game?

How many of those coaches have Brady(I hate Brady but he is a great qb)?

A great qb can mask a lot of problems.

Allow me to rephrase then. Take this year's patriots team and substitute any other coach. Does this year's team break 8-8 much less get to the AFC championship game?
